Condon-Johnson & Associates

View

Condon-Johnson & Associates designs and builds foundation systems for commercial, heavy civil and industrial construction projects across the western United States. Its crews drill shafts and install piles, build retaining systems that hold back soil around excavations, strengthen weak ground, inject grout and pump out groundwater. The family-owned contractor sells complete packages that run from engineering design through drilling and shoring, earning its revenue on construction contracts. District offices let local engineers work directly with public agencies and private industry in their own regions. Its roots date to 1974, and it is headquartered in Oakland, California.

What believers are saying

  • Denver's project manager role shares profits: the geotechnical posting lists a $105,000 to $140,000 salary plus a profit-sharing plan.
  • Los Angeles interns get a stated career path: the $25-an-hour construction internship targets project manager roles and Professional Engineer licensing.
  • Work reaches beyond California: its Seattle district manager oversees Pacific Northwest, Mountain West, Alaska and Hawaii operations.

What critics are saying

  • Craft postings are union-only: operators must be in the Operators Union; laborers in, or willing to join, the Laborers Union.
  • Laborer work is demanding: the posting requires strenuous physical work in all weather across days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Its work often runs under prime contractors: all five featured homepage projects name a contractor or joint venture as partner.

What makes Condon-Johnson & Associates unique

  • Its shafts go exceptionally deep: San Diego's I-5 bridge replacement used 10-foot-diameter piles reaching up to 260 feet below grade.
  • Grouting is tracked in real time: its own computer system recorded every injection test on the Calaveras Dam replacement.
  • Operators run specialist foundation rigs: its operator posting names Soilmec, Bauer and Liebherr drills plus low-headroom equipment.
