About the company

AT&T sells mobile phone plans and home internet to households and businesses across the US, and runs a wireless business in Mexico. Its business rests on two networks: a nationwide 5G wireless network and a fiber internet network that is replacing its old copper phone lines. Companies and government agencies also buy private networks, security and connectivity services from its business unit. Most revenue comes from monthly service plans plus device installment payments, and the company pushes customers to combine phone and home internet. AT&T Inc. began in 1983 as Southwestern Bell, took the AT&T name after buying its former parent in 2005, and is based in Dallas, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Fiber is AT&T's main growth bet: it targets over 40 million fiber locations by December 2026.
  • Fiber growth includes acquisitions: AT&T's February 2026 purchase of Lumen's consumer fiber unit added over 1 million customers.
  • AT&T is investing in offices: a $1.35 billion Plano campus, announced January 2026, will house nearly 6,000 staff.

What critics are saying

  • Debt stays high for years: AT&T expects about three years after its EchoStar purchase to restore its 2.5x debt target.
  • The workforce is shrinking: AT&T's headcount fell from about 141,000 to 133,000 in the year to December 2025.
  • FirstNet depends on Washington: a federal authority oversees AT&T's first-responder contract and needs renewal from Congress.

What makes AT&T unique

  • AT&T runs the national first-responder network: its FirstNet federal contract lasts until 2042.
  • AT&T bought more airwaves in July 2026: its $23 billion EchoStar deal added spectrum across about 400 markets.
  • AT&T sells phone and home internet together: 42.5% of its advanced internet homes also used AT&T wireless.

Itron links gas and water modules to AT&T's LTE-M network for utilities

Itron and AT&T are integrating Itron's 500G Cellular Gas Module and 500W Cellular Water Module with AT&T's nationwide LTE-M network. The move gives gas and water utilities another way to collect meter data remotely and securely, announced October 12, 2026. Utilities can gather consumption, event and alarm data over cellular without deploying and maintaining extra communications infrastructure. Itron says this helps streamline operations, reduce truck rolls and improve visibility into gas and water systems, including faster leak detection. Earlier this year, Itron extended its UtilityIQ head-end software to support both modules, letting utilities manage cellular and mesh networks together. "We're giving utilities greater flexibility to choose the communications approach that best supports their operational objectives," said John Marcolini, senior vice president of Networked Solutions at Itron.

AT&T faces Starlink threat after $8B SpaceX spectrum deal, as fiber push targets 60M locations

AT&T is expanding its fiber network and satellite coverage while Starlink Mobile moves into wireless. In early October 2026, the company introduced Apple's iPhone Duo foldable and joined joint ventures to extend fiber and satellite-enabled coverage to underserved US areas. SpaceX's $8 billion spectrum purchase for Starlink Mobile raises questions about AT&T's competitive position. AT&T's fiber venture with Global Infrastructure Partners and CPP Investments combines Gigapower and Forged Fiber 37 into a wholesale platform. The company aims to reach more than 60 million fiber locations by 2030 without heavy capital spending. Simply Wall St projects $137.1 billion in revenue and $18.7 billion in earnings by 2029, and puts fair value at $29.05. Some analysts expect earnings to fall to about $17.2 billion by then.

AT&T to streamline legal work with OpenAI partnership.

AT&T to streamline legal work with OpenAI partnership. 9 October 2026 AT&T has partnered with OpenAI to explore how AI can improve the way its in-house legal team works. As a flagship legal design partner, AT&T will work with OpenAI to develop and test AI-powered tools for everyday legal tasks, while ensuring lawyers remain responsible for key decisions. The partnership builds on AT&T LegalEdge, an AI-focused initiative launched in January 2026. The company revealed the programme has already handled nearly 100 matters in its first six months and aims to improve how legal knowledge is stored, shared and used across the company. Under the plans, AI agents could answer common legal questions or gather information to help lawyers prepare advice. However, the telecom giant said confidentiality, accountability and human oversight will remain central to the process. AT&T Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel, David McAtee: "AI gives legal departments an opportunity to do more than improve individual productivity. It gives us an opportunity to rethink how legal work moves through an organisation, how institutional knowledge is retained and how our lawyers focus their time. "Together with OpenAI, we are building an AT&T Legal Department-wide capability designed to make our knowledge and expertise more accessible to every AT&T organisation we serve. AI can expand what we do and how quickly we do it. Legal judgment remains human." OpenAI GM Legal Industry, Jason Boehmig, added: "AI can help in-house legal teams play an even greater role in advancing the business, from evaluating new opportunities to helping teams make informed decisions and act on them. "AT&T is helping lead the way by rethinking how its legal expertise and institutional knowledge can serve the entire company. Together, we're exploring how AI can put that knowledge to work across the business, with lawyers' judgment at the centre." AT&T SVP and Chief Compliance Officer, Bill Ryan, concluded: "Success will not be measured by how much technology we deploy. "It will be measured by whether we improve quality, make knowledge more accessible, build reusable capabilities, and give our legal professionals more capacity for the work that requires experience and judgment. This partnership is about doing that responsibly, in real workflows and at enterprise scale."
