Requirements
  • An Associate of Applied Science degree in Respiratory Care from an American Medical Association-approved school of respiratory therapy is required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care is required.
  • A license from the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners is required.
  • At least 2 years of work experience is required.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders.
  • Collect and analyze sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases.
  • Measure patients' lung capacity to determine whether impaired function is present.
  • Administer physician-prescribed treatment for patients with abnormalities associated with breathing.
  • Assume primary responsibility for respiratory care treatments, including oversight of respiratory therapy technicians.
