Requirements
  • A minimum of a Bachelor degree in Science is required.
  • A New York State Respiratory Therapist License is required.
  • Candidates must be currently active and registered with the National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • At least five years of clinical experience is required in both adult critical care and neonatal/pediatric care settings.
  • Working knowledge of pulmonary diagnostic equipment, therapeutic respiratory equipment, and personal computers is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Administer advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and provide mechanical ventilation for adults, children, and infants.
  • Use invasive and noninvasive technology to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary disorders.
  • Perform arterial punctures and analyze arterial blood gases.
  • Inspect, operate, maintain, and calibrate respiratory equipment, including oxygen equipment, continuous positive airway pressure devices, ventilators, and blood gas analyzers, as well as other life-support systems.
  • Maintain intubation competency by completing five procedures per year.
  • Insert radial arterial catheters, completing five procedures per year.
  • Assess and administer medical gases and aerosolized medications.
  • Follow weaning protocols in critical care areas.
  • Maintain 10 continuing education units per year or 30 continuing education units per New York State renewal period.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities assigned by the department director.
  • Participate in staff development and continuing education activities assigned by the department director.
  • Participate in departmental-level coordination activities assigned by the department director.
Desired Qualifications
  • A graduate degree is preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is preferred.
  • Specialty credentials preferred include Adult Critical Care Specialist, Neonatal Pediatric Specialist, Certified Asthma Educator, or Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist.
