Requirements
  • Hold an instructor certification such as Aquatic Exercise Association, American Council on Exercise, or Athletics and Fitness Association of America certification; a water specialty or certification is preferred.
  • Have working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, and training principles.
  • Know water aerobics teaching strategies, including music, tempo, cueing technique, and rhythm.
  • Have choreography and music skills.
  • Be professional and able to motivate class participants.
  • Be able to cooperate and work well with other staff members.
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard certification and cardiopulmonary resuscitation/first aid certification are preferred.
  • Be physically fit, have a high degree of energy, and have sufficient endurance to complete the workout.
  • Be able to project the voice over pool noise so class participants can hear instructions.
  • Be able to frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally assist in rescuing drowning swimmers.
Responsibilities
  • Teach scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time, with adequate warm-up, exercise, stretching, and cool-down.
  • Instruct patrons on effective workout methods, explain proper techniques, demonstrate exercises, identify different muscle groups, and teach appropriate methods to strengthen specific muscles.
  • Prepare appropriate equipment, music, and handouts for each class, including removing and replacing lane lines for class space.
  • Assist patrons, answer questions, and maintain a positive exercise experience for members and class participants.
  • Keep management informed of pool activities, facility needs, and significant problems.
  • Ensure that safety standards are met and that department and facility policies are followed.
  • Perform related duties as required.
