Nissan Frontier wins America's tailgating truck crown. by: Robert R. Grills come out, speakers get louder, coolers multiply, and suddenly the vehicle you arrived in becomes part kitchen, part power station and part social headquarters. That is the setting in which the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X has just picked up an unusually specific honor: it was voted the No. 1 Best Truck for Tailgating in the USA Today Sports Readers' Choice Awards. Editors created the shortlist, then readers and the public voted for the winners. It is not the sort of award that will settle a midsize-truck comparison test, but it does highlight something buyers often overlook. A useful pickup is not simply about horsepower or off-road hardware. Sometimes the best truck is the one that makes a Saturday afternoon easier. Why the Nissan Frontier Works for Tailgating The Frontier's advantage starts with the obvious thing: the bed. Nissan offers a six-foot cargo bed, which gives owners room for folding chairs, coolers, grills and the mountain of equipment that somehow appears whenever several people decide to eat outdoors. The Readers' Choice Awards result also makes sense because Nissan has equipped the Frontier with features that translate unusually well to parking-lot life. Two available 120-volt power outlets can handle the sort of small appliances and accessories that make a tailgate more civilized, while the available 10-speaker Fender Premium Audio system provides a better soundtrack than a portable speaker balanced on a cooler. None of this is revolutionary technology. That is partly the point. Tailgating rewards simple, practical features that work without turning the afternoon into a tutorial. A Midsize Truck With Real Weekend Capability The Frontier is not just useful once you reach the stadium. Nissan says the truck can tow up to 7,150 pounds, giving it enough capacity for boats, utility trailers and other weekend toys. That broadens the argument beyond football fans: many of the same features that make a pickup useful for tailgating also make it useful for camping, road trips and home projects. For 2027, Nissan is adding a Sport Edition package to the SV trim. It borrows visual cues from the PRO-4X, adds yellow accents, all-terrain tires and additional skid-plate protection. There is also an available Qi2 wireless phone charger designed to provide faster, more consistent charging. Pricing remains an important part of the equation. The 2027 Nissan Frontier starts at $32,490 before destination, taxes and options. That is not cheap transportation, but in a truck market where larger pickups can quickly climb into luxury-car territory, a midsize truck with real utility can make a convincing case. Built in America With a Familiar V6 Under the hood, the Frontier sticks with a standard 3.8-liter V6. Nissan describes it as the most powerful naturally aspirated V6 in its class, a notable distinction as more competitors move toward turbocharged four-cylinder engines and hybrid systems. The truck is also assembled at Nissan's Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant in Mississippi. Nissan says more than one million Frontiers have been built there and two million have been assembled in the United States overall. The V6 itself is assembled at Nissan's Decherd Powertrain Assembly Plant in Tennessee. Nissan also says Frontier is currently the fastest-growing pickup in the United States, based on retail sales growth from December 2025 through July 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier. The company adds that 92% of Frontiers sold over the last decade are still on the road, based on S&P Global Mobility Vehicles in Operation data. Awards built around reader voting should always be kept in perspective. This one does not prove the Frontier is the best midsize pickup for every buyer. What it does suggest is that owners and fans recognize a truck that understands the social side of utility. A six-foot bed, usable power, strong towing capability and a decent sound system may not win a spec-sheet war, but on game day, they are exactly the features people notice.

Coming off its major overhaul for this model year, the 2027 Nissan Sentra comes in with relatively few changes on the menu. That said, it does still bring notable improvements to the table, while adding a new option and keeping prices in check. Even at the base end, Nissan's compact sedan comes in less expensive than the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic, while giving you a little bit more for your money. For the upcoming model year, pricing for the 2027 Nissan Sentra now starts at $24,135 for the base S (including $1,245 destination). That's about $290 more than last year. From there, you still move up through the ($24,835) SV, SR ($26,235) and SL ($29,235) trims. Video Muted Across the board, all Sentra models still come with a 2.0-liter engine delivering 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is also still your only transmission, though Nissan says it has further updated the unit to deliver "a smoother and more linear acceleration profile". Now, the power level TFLcar is talking about here still doesn't make this new Sentra a sports car. That said, hopefully the changes make it a bit more pleasant during the day-to-day commuter beat (TFLcar'll test that out when TFLcar get its hands on a 2027 model). The Midnight Edition returns to the new Sentra, as a $650 package on the top-end SR. That gets you 18-inch black alloy wheels, a two-tone roof, black badging and black trim around the windows. For the rest of the lineup, Nissan updated the wireless charging solution to the new Qi2 charging standard, improving both the charging performance and cooling efficiency compared to older inductive chargers out there.

Nissan's new adventurous compact fires a shot at Subaru and Toyota. Updated Fri, August 14, 2026 at 12:33 PM PDT The rugged Rock Creek trim has officially made its way to the most affordable AWD SUV in the brand's range. Earlier this year, my colleague Chris Chin waxed curious about the possibility of a new Rock Creek option for Nissan's most affordable AWD SUV, the Kicks. Despite having personally had some less-than-stellar experiences in a first-generation Kicks rental, I don't blame him. Between the potential for rugged vibes and the prospect of added off-road capability, the notion did promise to give the compact some, well, cool. Now, Nissan has officially unveiled the 2027 Kicks Rock Creek. In looks, spirit and capability, it's a vehicle that takes direct aim at competition like the Toyota Corolla Cross and the Subaru Crosstrek. Nissan's all-terrain Kicks. While the Rock Creek trim doesn't turn the Kicks into a hardcore off-roader, it's nevertheless more than a cosmetic exercise. Much like Honda's TrailSport and Subaru's Wilderness options, it appears to be a well-rounded treatment - at least on paper. As such, along with exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels, a set of amber DRLs and a roof rack, the package does actually bring some tweaks to its standard Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. In addition to an exclusive "Off-Road mode," Nissan says it sports unique traction control tuning, as well as Hill Descent Control. Nissan doesn't make any especially bold claims about what such enhancements enable, but it does say that they can help owners when driving on slippery or unpredictable surfaces. If nothing else, they should at least make it easier to get to and from the weekend campground. And besides, to make sure that drivers feel like they look the part, the Kicks does get gussied up for its Rock Creek look. From gloss black front and rear fascias and mirrors to exclusive TailorFit upholstery, Rock Creek accent stitching and floor mats, Nissan has outfitted the compact SUV with a suite of styling touches. Now, the changes don't extend to the powertrain. As such, Nissan's Kicks still makes do with its naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder, rated for 141 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. A shot at compact rivals. All the same, the package makes for a promising foray for the model, as it positions Nissan competitively relative to its rivals. MSRP for the 2027 Kicks Rock Creek is set to start at $28,840 before delivery, putting it right in line with other adventurous compact crossovers like the Kia Seltos X-Line. However, I'd argue that this makes it especially dangerous for the Toyota and Subaru faithful. That's because the Corolla Cross still hasn't gotten the same kind of treatment as its RAV4 sibling, but even a bare-bones base model will cost you at least $26,535 if you want to spring for AWD. When you consider the differences it brings in tech and style, the Rock Creek makes for a compelling alternative to trims like the LE and XLE. Likewise, even though Subaru's Crosstrek has a slight edge in ground clearance (8.7 inches versus 8.4 on the Nissan) and base price, you'll wind up paying more money if you're after similarly expressive style. The Crosstrek Sport starts at $30,625, while the Wilderness runs from $33,795. Availability and pricing. As previously mentioned, Nissan's 2027 Kicks Rock Creek will start at $28,840 before delivery.
