  • The employee must maintain patient information confidentiality and protect HIPAA Protected Health Information according to applicable policies and laws.
Responsibilities
  • Accurately identify patients in highly stressful situations as a patient-safety measure.
  • Perform bedside registration, including collecting patient demographic and insurance information, obtaining regulatory-form signatures through document management and electronic signature, and collecting Medicare Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire information.
  • Identify and verify insurance at the bedside and obtain additional information for no-fault or workers' compensation cases involving motor-vehicle accidents and workplace injuries.
  • Execute access-related clinical measures and meet required timeframes, including chest-pain door-to-electrocardiogram notification.
  • Review, assess, and assign the appropriate health-insurance plan and collect applicable copayments at the bedside.
  • Capture patients' pharmacy information to support expedited discharge by nurses and physicians.
  • Answer a multiline telephone system and manage calls calmly, courteously, and respectfully.
  • Capture brief ambulance-radio information, including patient description, age, chief complaint, and vital signs.
  • Manage the emergency-department patient tracker and complete assigned Access Specialist tasks.
  • Verify laboratory specimens and ensure their timely delivery to the laboratory.
  • Manage daily workflow during scheduled and unscheduled system downtimes by following downtime procedures and maintaining emergency-department downtime flow.
  • Ensure Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act regulations are maintained.
  • Triage walk-in patients by collecting and entering data in the admission, discharge, and transfer system, placing patient wristbands, obtaining Health Information Xchange of New York consent signatures, completing full registration when applicable, and collecting financial responsibility.
  • Provide emergency-department zone support by answering and transferring calls, discharging patients through the medical record, and verifying laboratory specimens for accurate labeling.
  • Provide emergency-medical-services desk support by answering ambulance-agency calls from the field, recording patient information, and managing unidentified-patient procedures.
  • Rotate assignments and work across multiple emergency-department disciplines as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate's Degree is preferred.
  • One to three years of customer service experience or experience in a hospital or clinic setting is preferred.
