Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Hold current appropriate state licensure and meet the practice requirements in the state of employment.
  • Hold current CPR Basic Life Support certification or successfully complete it.
  • Have less than two years of nephrology nursing experience as a registered nurse for entry-level placement.
  • Complete all Clinical Advancement Program requirements to advance.
  • Perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and occasional movement of equipment up to 200 pounds and chemical or water solutions up to 30 pounds.
  • Be able to work in an environment involving potential exposure to infectious and contagious diseases or materials.
  • Be available to travel to training sites or other facilities when required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform ongoing systematic collection and analysis of patient data before, during, and after hemodialysis treatment, document findings in the patient medical record, modify treatment plans as indicated, and notify the appropriate clinical personnel or physician as needed.
  • Assess, collaborate on, and document patients’ and families’ basic learning needs, and provide initial and ongoing education.
  • Direct and provide the daily safe and effective delivery of hemodialysis therapy in collaboration with direct and ancillary patient care staff.
  • Administer medications as prescribed or according to approved algorithms, and document medical justification and effectiveness.
  • Initiate or assist with emergency response measures.
  • Serve as a resource for the health care team and participate in staff training and orientation of new staff as assigned.
  • Ensure correct laboratory collection, processing, and shipping procedures, and reschedule missed or insufficient collections.
  • Identify expected outcomes and document and update nursing assessments and plans of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Ensure patients are aware of transplant and treatment modality options.
  • Provide assigned oversight of Patient Care Technicians, licensed practical/vocational nurses, and registered nurses as a Team Leader or designated Nurse in Charge after completing required training and experience conditions.
