  • Two years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or five years of experience as a Certified Respiratory Therapist is required, along with clinical competency in at least two of the following environments: Nursery/NICU, PICU, ICU/CCU, ED, and general care areas.
  • The practitioner must demonstrate knowledge of non-invasive respiratory therapy equipment, including oximeters and end-tidal carbon dioxide analyzers.
  • The practitioner must be able to perform therapeutic procedures including continuous positive airway pressure, bilevel positive airway pressure, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high-flow oxygen, continuous aerosols, ventilator management, and diagnostic testing.
  • The practitioner must understand electrocardiograms, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
  • The practitioner must be able to perform arterial blood gas punctures and testing, airway maneuvers, bedside pulmonary function testing, patient assessment, and patient education.
  • The practitioner must have knowledge of chest suction equipment and chest X-ray interpretation.
  • The practitioner must be able to gather and interpret data and maintain accountability, organization, and time management.
  • The practitioner must be able to effectively interact with patients, families, physicians, and staff and work with diverse people.
  • The practitioner must be able to receive feedback.
  • The practitioner must be able to provide clear oral and written communication.
Responsibilities
  • Provide respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation.
  • Perform respiratory care procedures including oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services, and patient and staff education.
  • Monitor patient responses to respiratory therapies and recommend changes or modifications based on assessment.
  • Provide clinical instruction and in-service training to department staff, healthcare team members, and students as needed.
  • Support clinical learning through mentorship, clinical rounds, and practice evaluation, and provide clinical leadership for professional respiratory practice across intensive care, general care, and outpatient services.
  • Provide feedback for coaching and performance evaluations of team members.
  • Assist with identifying quality improvement initiatives and design programs with measurable outcomes.
  • Lead clinical research initiatives, including education, training, and implementation of study designs.
  • Collect data, maintain accurate records, and evaluate products as needed.
  • Participate in facility councils and committees.
  • Serve as the shift Charge Therapist by ensuring adequate respiratory care staffing, assigning staff to work areas and assignments, modifying assignments, assisting with meal coverage, handling call-offs, and supporting staffing for the next shift.
  • Assist physicians with bronchoscopy, transtracheal catheter insertion, tracheotomy, intubation when performed by respiratory therapy, and invasive monitoring as needed.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including closed-chest compressions and airway management, in accordance with American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support protocol.
  • Conduct therapeutic procedures to maintain patient airways, including airway placement, airway humidification, secretion aspiration, extubation, endotracheal tube cuff-pressure maintenance, and documentation.
  • Select, assemble, monitor, and evaluate mechanical ventilators; correct malfunctions, maintain cleanliness, and determine suitability for patient conditions.
  • Perform pulmonary function tests as needed.
  • Serve as a preceptor to new team members and students.
  • Assess patients through inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, behavior assessment, and review of existing medical-record data.
  • Perform treatments according to physician orders, explain therapies and therapeutic goals, and modify treatment procedures based on patient response.
  • Evaluate prescribed therapy and recommend methods to physicians to achieve therapeutic goals, including intermittent positive pressure breathing, aerosol therapy, postural drainage and percussion, ultrasonic nebulizers, incentive spirometry, metered-dose inhalers, and spacers.
  • Set up and maintain oxygen-therapy modes to maintain adequate arterial oxygen levels with accurate inspired oxygen concentrations.
  • Administer intermittent positive pressure breathing and aerosol therapy, prepare prescribed medications, adjust devices to individual clinical needs, document and observe patient responses, and identify adverse reactions.
  • Perform postural drainage, vibration, and percussion to support bronchial secretion clearance, reviewing orders and X-rays and assessing breath sounds before and after treatment.
  • Instruct patients and families in incentive spirometry, metered-dose inhaler administration, postural drainage and clapping, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, and home aerosol therapy.
  • Obtain sputum specimens for culture and sensitivity or perform airway clearance through patient coaching, mucolytic administration, aerosol therapy, and endotracheal or nasopharyngeal suctioning.
  • Evaluate normal and pathologic blood and urine laboratory values.
  • Perform arterial punctures and analysis, interpret arterial blood gases, and perform arterial-line procedures including sterile technique, flushing, and arterial blood gas aspiration.
  • Perform electrocardiograms as needed and use electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmia knowledge.
  • Maintain respiratory therapy equipment and supplies.
  • Respond to cardiopulmonary resuscitations and participate according to clinical circumstances.

July 6, 2026 By Bob McKenna Virginia Peninsula Chamber Healthcare remains one of the Peninsula's largest economic drivers, and a major investment announced this spring will strengthen both regional healthcare capacity and the local economy. Bon Secours recently broke ground on a new $200 million patient tower at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News. The four-story, 144,000-square-foot expansion will significantly enhance emergency, maternity, neonatal, and critical care services while modernizing facilities for patients and families throughout the Virginia Peninsula. The project will double emergency department capacity, expand intensive care services, and improve access to care for one of the region's fastest-growing population centers. Construction is expected to be completed in 2028, representing one of the largest healthcare investments on the Peninsula in recent years.
