Requirements
  • At least 10 years of progressive finance experience, including 3–5 years in a senior finance leadership role.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with project-based construction accounting, including draw management, fraud oversight, project segmentation, and revenue recognition in a construction or procurement context.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions, including independently owning financial due diligence and earnout modeling.
  • Experience in a venture-backed startup or high-growth technology company, including tracking key metrics, cohort economics, and investor-grade reporting.
  • Experience building or operating within a multi-entity or multi-business-unit structure where financials roll up to a consolidated parent.
  • Hands-on experience identifying automation opportunities, mapping workflows for artificial intelligence intervention, and building or specifying systems that reduce repetitive, high-volume finance and operational work.
  • Ability to understand operational money flows, improve financial systems and workflows, communicate complex financial structures to non-finance executives and board members, and work autonomously in ambiguity.
Responsibilities
  • Own the full finance function, including financial planning and analysis, accounting, reporting, and cash flow management across project purchases and fee revenue.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Chief Executive Officer on capital allocation, revenue model evolution, and the financial implications of the company’s staged artificial intelligence transformation.
  • Build and maintain the financial architecture supporting the transition from a managed services business to a hybrid platform model.
  • Lead annual budgeting, quarterly forecasting, and rolling financial planning processes.
  • Own project accounting operations across the active procurement portfolio, including cost-to-complete tracking, draw schedules, client billing, and detailed project-level analysis.
  • Maintain financial separation across concurrent projects and ensure revenue recognition and cost allocation meet generally accepted accounting principles in a project-based construction context.
  • Enforce internal controls for procurement-in-trust workflows involving significant client capital.
  • Lead financial due diligence on acquisition targets, including quality of earnings analysis, revenue concentration assessment, integration cost modeling, and earnout structure design.
  • Build valuation models and deal scenario analyses for prospective acquisition targets.
  • Support post-close integration planning, including entity consolidation, intercompany accounting, and performance tracking against earnout milestones.
  • Partner with legal counsel, internal stakeholders, and external teams on deal structure, asset-versus-entity transactions, and risk mitigation.
  • Design the reporting and integration framework for mergers and acquisitions and advise on multi-entity structures and consolidation timing.
  • Ensure financial visibility at both entity and consolidated levels for portfolio-level executive and board decision-making.
  • Manage relationships with banking partners, external auditors, and fractional or advisory resources.
  • Assess, hire, and develop the internal finance team as the business scales.
  • Own the selection and implementation of financial systems supporting an enterprise-resource-planning-agnostic platform strategy and increasing operational complexity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with hybrid business models, particularly companies with both a services or managed business and a software or platform revenue line.
  • Experience operating as a builder in a finance function that is still being developed.
  • Experience in commercial real estate, construction technology, procurement, or hospitality-adjacent businesses.
  • Familiarity with earnout-based deal structures, integration accounting, and post-close financial performance tracking.
  • Prior experience with external capital raises or board-level financial reporting.

M13 backs early-stage software startups, focusing on seed and Series A investments, especially in AI and web3-enabled consumer tech. The firm uses its Propulsion model to deliver strategic and operational guidance from a team of experienced executives, providing hands-on support to help portfolio companies scale. By combining venture capital with elements of private equity, M13 aims to be a long-term partner rather than just a funder. With offices in Los Angeles and New York and funds including a $400 million vehicle, its goal is to help founders build durable, growth-focused businesses in areas like the future of work, health, commerce, and money.

What believers are saying

  • M13 backed Jimini Health's $17 million seed round in 2026, riding AI mental-health demand.
  • M13 led Rime's Series A on July 15, 2026, targeting enterprise voice AI.
  • M13's site added OpenFX, Teleskope, and Makora in July 2026, showing active deployment.

What critics are saying

  • M13 remains tied to crowded seed AI markets where follow-on capital tightened in 2026.
  • Consumer-focused bets like dating, music, and commerce face fast product commoditization.
  • If AI incumbents replicate portfolio features, M13 becomes a generic early-stage capital provider.

What makes m13 unique

  • M13's Propulsion model pairs seed checks with hands-on operators across product, hiring, and GTM.
  • Its July 2026 portfolio centers on AI, health, commerce, and infrastructure, not broad software.

For the first time in human history, a rich understanding of language is available as a utility, delivered via API, useful enough to “be metered”. Intelligence has become a tool: something you can call, compose, and build on, divorced from any individual human mind.

Ex-Glossier execs raise $7M from Equal Ventures to build AI operating brain for commerce brands

Chord, an AI platform for commerce operations founded by ex-Glossier executives Bryan Mahoney and Henry Davis, has raised $7 million in funding led by Equal Ventures, bringing total capital raised to $45 million. M13, Chingona Ventures and CEAS Investments also participated. The New York-based startup, founded in 2021, is building a "context layer" that unifies a company's data, rules and operational logic to enable real-time decision-making. Its "context graph" stores metrics, constraints and past decisions, becoming more accurate over time. Chord's customers include MrBeast, Ritual, Ruggable and Blue Bottle Coffee, collectively representing over $1 billion in annual revenue. The platform competes with Klaviyo, Triple Whale and Northbeam. The funding will accelerate agent infrastructure development and sales amongst commerce businesses generating between $20 million and $1 billion revenue.
