Requirements
- Nurse practitioners must graduate from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- Nurse practitioners must hold national certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center.
- Nurse practitioners must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- Nurse practitioners must hold Basic Life Support certification; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department’s discretion.
- Physician assistants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable.
- Physician assistants must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
- Physician assistants must hold certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Physician assistants must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine.
- Physician assistants must hold Basic Life Support certification; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department’s discretion.
- Candidates must demonstrate proficiency with computers.
- Candidates must have communication skills.
- The role requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The role involves working closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, hands in water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for behavioral medicine patients and their families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and emergent evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with behavioral medicine faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff about abnormal findings in patient evaluations.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and tests required for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop individualized plans of care that include teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Provide care across the age continuum consistent with educational experience and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex behavioral medicine situations and facilitate appropriate intervention.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate behavioral medicine patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain and update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for behavioral medicine patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate in the area of expertise.
- Document the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient’s medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve improvements in patient outcomes and care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in behavioral medicine practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role and delivery of care to behavioral medicine patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret behavioral medicine data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist behavioral medicine faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute care or behavioral medicine experience is preferred for nurse practitioners.
- Acute care, surgical, or behavioral medicine experience is preferred for physician assistants.
- A Psychiatry Certificate of Added Qualifications is preferred for physician assistants.
- Master’s-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
