Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited medical assisting program as required by the certifying body.
  • Maintain RMA, CMA, or NCMA credentials according to requirements established by the certifying body.
  • Provide a copy of credentials to Human Resources before the certification period expires.
  • At the time of hire, be a registered or certified Medical Assistant through AMT, AAMA, NCCT, NHA, AAH, or NAHP; a different credentialing body requires review and approval by the Director of Nursing.
  • Obtain CPR certification in accordance with American Heart Association guidelines within 30 days of hire.
  • Follow clinic policies, including the Nursing Dress Code Policy, and adhere to clinic performance standards.
  • Comply with Springfield Clinic incident reporting policies and procedures, and complete required OSHA and Springfield Clinic training and accomplishments.
  • Adhere to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with organizing the nursing station and work area to facilitate efficient workflow.
  • Organize written medical information for physician and nurse review, place it in the correct order in the record, and proofread appropriate dictation.
  • Assist with answering phones for physicians, nurses, and receptionists.
  • Schedule appointments according to patient needs.
  • Open and distribute mail, file miscellaneous office information, and organize written communications.
  • Order office supplies using cost-containment methods.
  • Order medical supplies, stock examination rooms, and clean them according to infection-control policies.
  • Interview patients to determine their chief complaint and document the information in the medical record.
  • Take and document vital signs.
  • Perform office procedures, including sterile urine catheterization, suture removal, staple removal, or cast removal, under the direction of an NP, PA, or physician.
  • Order diagnostic tests, exams, and procedures according to physician orders.
  • Prepare patients for physician examinations.
  • Give patients instructions for home care and medications under the direction of an NP, PA, or physician.
  • Administer oral and subcutaneous medications under the direction of an NP, PA, or physician.
  • Administer allergy injections only under the direct supervision of the physician who prescribed the antigen.
  • Perform insurance pre-certifications and referrals as necessary.
  • Provide patient and family education and reinforce patient teaching under a provider's direction.
  • Call prescriptions in to pharmacies, provide patient instructions, and document under a provider's direction.
  • Schedule procedures and surgeries as necessary.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
