  • Define and track key system-level design parameters throughout the design.
  • Develop and validate simulation models for fixed-wing aircraft dynamics, integrating aerodynamics, propulsion systems, avionics, and environmental factors.
  • Architect, model, simulate, and implement structural, avionics, propulsion, and flight control systems to meet aircraft performance and stability requirements.
  • Lead detailed structural, thermal, and electromagnetic analysis of critical airframe components to ensure durability, reliability, and compliance.
  • Forge and manage vendor relationships.
  • Define, develop, and test robust interfaces to ensure all subsystems work together.
  • Travel up to 30% of the time, including domestic and international travel.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience successfully delivering large fixed-wing unmanned aircraft systems or autonomous aircraft in a similar function.
  • Ability to quickly perform trade studies across design, components, systems, and vendors, and present findings to leadership.
  • Experience with laboratory and flight testing of aircraft and/or major subsystems.
  • Broad understanding across major aircraft systems, including aerodynamics, flight controls, structures, avionics, propulsion including internal combustion engines, and mission software, with meaningful depth in at least one area.
  • Experience with systems engineering, requirements management, computer-aided design, software engineering, and program management tools.
  • Aviation enthusiasm, private pilot certification, and flight experience.
  • Military experience and a security clearance.

About the company

Enigma Aerospace builds autonomous logistics systems for contested environments. It combines long-range standalone aircraft with a logistics orchestration software platform to deliver critical supplies without relying on traditional infrastructure, enabling runway-independent delivery through precision airdrop or STOL and operations in GPS-denied areas. The Phoenix P-1000 is a 1,000-pound payload, 2,100 nautical mile aircraft, and the Strata platform handles logistics orchestration to direct autonomous fleets. The system is designed to be scalable and attritable for high-volume use and is aimed at defense customers such as the U.S. Air Force, Army, and SOCOM, with funding from venture and government sources and an advisory board of former military leaders. Enigma’s goal is to deploy these capabilities to warfighters by 2027, expanding logistics support for missions in austere, heavily contested theaters like the Pacific.

What believers are saying

  • Honeywell's July 8, 2026 MOU opens navigation, EW, and SATCOM integration.
  • Re:Build's May 19, 2026 MOU targets first flight and low-rate production within twelve months.
  • Bryan Fenton joined the advisory board on August 24, 2026, strengthening SOCOM credibility.

What critics are saying

  • Both 2026 partnerships are MOUs, not purchase contracts; revenue remains unproven.
  • Textron Aviation, Merlin, and Grid Aero unveiled competing contested-logistics aircraft in 2026.
  • If Phoenix misses 2027 fielding, Enigma becomes a demo company without defense adoption.

What makes Enigma Aerospace unique

  • Phoenix pairs 1,000-pound payloads with 2,100-nautical-mile range and runway-independent operations.
  • Strata adds mission planning and fleet coordination for GPS-denied contested logistics.
  • Re:Build Manufacturing and Honeywell Aerospace anchored Enigma's production and mission-systems stack in 2026.

Enigma Aerospace raises $7M to build autonomous cargo drones for contested war zones

Enigma Aerospace has emerged from stealth with $7 million in venture and Department of War funding to build autonomous logistics systems for contested military environments. The Burlington, Massachusetts-based company aims to deliver its capability to warfighters by 2027. Founded by veterans from American Robotics, Ondas, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford and the US Air Force, Enigma has developed two core products. Phoenix is an autonomous cargo aircraft capable of delivering up to 1,000 pounds over 2,000 nautical miles without runways, using proprietary DropPod technology. Strata is a logistics orchestration platform for mission planning and fleet coordination. The system addresses sustainment challenges for distributed forces in contested environments by enabling runway-independent delivery in GPS-denied conditions. Enigma is backed by Cybernetix Ventures, Valia Ventures and US Air Force funding.
