About the Job

Requirements

  • A minimum of an M.S. in Chemical Engineering or related field with no experience, or a B.S. in Chemical Engineering or related field with three years of laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in particle engineering, micronization technologies, and particle size distribution control, including applying Design of Experiments to optimize manufacturing processes and product performance.
  • A strong understanding of undergraduate chemical engineering principles, supported by practical industrial or research experience relevant to the industry and some process development experience.
  • A strong understanding of engineering research and development equipment, including pumps, heat exchangers, and reactors, and instrumentation; controls-programming knowledge; routine maintenance capability; ability to train others on equipment; and troubleshooting ability.
  • Understanding of cross-functional principles, including analytical chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, and process chemistry.
  • Demonstrated ability to use HPLC and GC, investigate root-cause issues, and a good understanding of mass spectrometry; experience with automated reactors and possibly in-situ reaction monitoring.
  • Demonstrated understanding of good manufacturing practice as it relates to current work and ability, with less manager input, to advise clients on key regulatory strategies.
  • Ability to handle client requests with manager review and communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Ability to solve workplace problems and help lead investigations with manager support.
  • Ability to self-organize and manage time with or without supervision.
  • Ability to write and review reports and technical documents with minimal errors, and maintain a current laboratory notebook while practicing good documentation practices.
  • Ability to support key operational excellence initiatives and locally support changes associated with larger company initiatives.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of laboratory, pilot plant, manufacturing, and office work, including operating instruments and equipment, moving around work areas, and lifting up to 25 pounds independently and up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, distinguish colors, read gauges and instrument displays, observe experiments, and identify process or equipment issues.
  • Position may require occasional off-shift work, extended hours, or weekend support.

Responsibilities

  • Design and carry out multistep organic processes.
  • Apply chemical engineering principles within a matrix-based chemical development team to construct systems and design processes that support safe, efficient, on-scale production of pharmaceutical candidates.
  • Use analytical and spectroscopic techniques and interpret the resulting data to assess product quality and process performance.
  • Perform laboratory and pilot-scale synthesis and purification, including implementing process modifications.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, including pumps and instrumentation.
  • Work independently and complete projects with minimal supervision.
  • Organize work and manage time effectively.
  • Write comprehensive reports and contribute to drafting batch records and protocols.
  • Coordinate project activities with process engineers, process development chemists, and analytical chemists to develop safer, more robust laboratory and plant production processes.
  • Maintain current knowledge of techniques relevant to organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, process development, and current good manufacturing practice regulations, including root-cause and batch-failure analysis.
  • Conduct laboratory operations safely, follow the chemical hygiene plan, and use safe work practices.
  • Dispose of chemicals responsibly and comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Complete routine administrative requirements in a timely manner.
  • Promote ongoing project results within the group and to external clients.
  • Coordinate project-related equipment and activities with manufacturing and good manufacturing practice operations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory work area.
  • Participate in regular internal project team meetings, submit key technical reports, and organize group-level initiatives within the scientific team.
  • Support key operational excellence initiatives and local implementation of broader company initiatives.
  • Perform work in laboratory, manufacturing, and office settings, including occasional ladder or elevated-platform access while following safety procedures.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and experience with continuous processing and flow chemistry.
  • Knowledge of and experience with in-situ reaction monitoring technology.
  • Knowledge of final-form screening, polymorph screening, and crystallization studies.
  • Knowledge of process controls and associated programming.
  • Pharmaceutical experience.
  • Experience with jet milling, crystallization, particle characterization, and scale-up of pharmaceutical active pharmaceutical ingredient processes.
