Nexgrill & Weber recall over 13 million grill brushes: what you need to know. Between February and March 2026, Nexgrill and Weber issued recalls for more than 13 million metal wire bristle grill brushes after reports that small metal bristles can detach, stick to grill grates or food, and be ingested, causing serious internal injuries that may require surgery. This is a serious public safety hazard, particularly for children and vulnerable adults. About the recalls. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a voluntary recall of Nexgrill and Weber metal wire bristle grill brushes. The Weber brushes were sold nationwide from 2011 through 2026. The recalled brushes were available at major retailers, including Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and Target, as well as online at Amazon and Weber.com, and were priced between $10 and $17. The Nexgrill brushes were sold in stores at Home Depot and online at homedepot.com from 2015 through 2026 for between about $5 and $15. The following model numbers are included in the Weber recall (found on the product packaging): * Model 6277 * Model 6278 * Model 6463 * Model 6464 * Model 6493 * Model 6494 Weber is aware of at least 38 reports of wire bristles detaching from these brushes, including at least four confirmed cases in which consumers swallowed metal bristles and required medical treatment to have them removed from their digestive tract or throat. The following model numbers are included in the Nexgrill recall (found on the product packaging): * 530-0024 * 530-0024G * 530-0034 * 530-0039 * 530-0041 * 530-0042 Nexgrill is aware of at least 68 reports and reviews where small wire bristles detached from the grill brushes, including five reports of consumers who swallowed metal bristles and sought medical treatment to remove the bristles from their digestive tract or throat. Why this defect is so dangerous. Wire bristle injuries from grill brushes have been a documented public health concern for years. A dislodged bristle is virtually invisible to the naked eye, especially once it adheres to food on the grill. When swallowed, these tiny metal fragments can pierce the tongue, throat, esophagus, stomach lining, or intestines, causing internal lacerations, infections, and, in serious cases, requiring emergency surgery. Children are particularly vulnerable. A bristle that detaches during grilling can find its way onto virtually any food, and a child may not be able to describe what they swallowed or where they feel pain, delaying critical medical care. What should you do right now? If you own any of the recalled Nexgrill or Weber grill brushes, take these steps immediately: * Stop using the brush immediately and remove it from your home. * Contact Weber for a free replacement nylon bristle grill brush by calling 877-597-9588 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. ET) or visiting weberbrushrecall.expertinquiry.com. * Contact Nexgrill for a full refund to be issued as a gift card. Consumers will be provided with a registration code as part of the recall process and will be directed to upload a photograph of their grill brush with that code and their initials to the recall website to register for the recall. After receiving a confirmation email that their registration has been successfully processed, consumers will then receive directions on how to dispose of the recalled grill brush. * Seek immediate medical attention if you or a family member may have ingested a metal bristle. Symptoms can include throat pain, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, or rectal bleeding. * Keep the recalled brush and all packaging; do not throw it away if you are considering legal action. Your legal rights. If you or a family member has been injured by a Nexgrill or Weber grill brush bristle, you may be entitled to compensation. Companies like Nexgrill and Weber have an obligation to design and manufacture products that are safe for consumer use. The grill tool that could turn dangerous over time. While cleaning your grill protects you from a number of health risks, relying on a particular tool to do it could also be dangerous. Grill manufacturer Nexgrill recently recalled over 10 million of its metal wire grill brushes because of defects that could cause their bristles to detach and cause physical harm (via the New York Times). According to culinary entrepreneur and Carnivore Style senior editor Gabrielle Yap, any wire grill brush could pose an injury risk with regular use. When when Mashed consulted Yap about common grill cleaning mistakes, the senior editor shared, "Wire brushes are popular for their effectiveness, but if they start to wear out, bristles can break off and stick to the grill, potentially ending up in your food. This is a serious health hazard." When this happens, people can accidentally swallow the bristles, which can then puncture their mouths, throats, stomachs, and intestines. What makes all this particularly concerning is that these injuries are becoming more common. A 2016 study published in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery found 43 such incidents were reported between 2002 to 2014. The researchers extrapolated that an estimated 1698 emergency cases resulted from wire grill brush-related injuries. A separate 2026 study in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology found that the number of injuries more than doubled from 2015 to 2023, with an estimated count of 3739 cases based on 85 recorded instanced. The 2026 study went so far as to recommend banning wire grill brushes altogether, a sentiment previously expressed by the American College of Surgeons back in 2023. Alternative tools you can use to clean your grill grates. There are, thankfully, a wide variety of other tools you could be using instead of wire grill brushes. Gabrielle Yap suggested using nylon-bristled brushes, which trade scrubbing power for safety over metal wire brushes, or silicone-layered brushes with cleaning coils. Heat-resistant fabric scrubbers are another safe option. You can also make your own grill scrubber using a common kitchen item. All you need to do is crumple up some aluminum foil into a ball large enough to hold between a pair of tongs, and then scrub your grill while it's hot, making sure to remove any foil that gets stuck by wiping the grill with a wet cloth once it's cooled down. Alternatively, you can also clean your grill with a vegetable - onions do a surprisingly good job of cleaning warm grills. If you absolutely must stick with using a metal wire grill brush, you can at least make it a little less dangerous with proper care and maintenance. Outside of regularly inspecting it for loose or brittle bristles, you'll want to replace your grill brush fairly often - once every season should be the bare minimum, and more frequently if you find yourself grilling all the time. The last thing you want is for your family to go from enjoying a barbecue in your backyard to rushing to the hospital because a metal wire has punctured someone's stomach. Even the best steaks ever aren't worth the risk of surgery.

Nexgrill recalls 10.2 million grill brushes after wire bristles found in food, throats. The recall covers six models of Nexgrill-branded brushes sold at Home Depot from 2015 through 2026. Credit: deKarl - stock.adobe.com WASHINGTON - Nexgrill Industries is recalling more than 10.2 million metal wire bristle grill brushes after reports that small bristles detached from the brushes, stuck to grills and food, and were swallowed by consumers, in some cases requiring medical intervention to remove the bristles from their throats or digestive tracts. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Thursday. It covers six models of Nexgrill-branded brushes sold at Home Depot stores and on homedepot.com from 2015 through 2026. Nexgrill is aware of at least 68 reports of bristles detaching from the brushes, including five cases in which consumers swallowed metal bristles and sought medical treatment. The recall covers metal wire bristle grill brushes with black plastic or wood handles measuring between 18 and 21 inches long. The six affected model numbers - printed on the product packaging - are 530-0024, 530-0024G, 530-0034, 530-0039, 530-0041 and 530-0042. All carry the Nexgrill name on the product. The brushes sold for between about $5 and $15. Consumers who aren't sure whether their brush is affected should check the model number on the original packaging, if available. Consumers should stop using the recalled brushes immediately, the CPSC said. Refunds will be issued as a Nexgrill gift card. Owners must contact the company to obtain a registration code, then visit the recall website and upload a photo of their brush along with the code and their initials. After receiving a confirmation email, consumers will be given instructions on how to properly discard the brush. The CPSC advises consumers not to throw the brushes away before completing the registration process, as a photo of the product is required. Wire bristle grill brush injuries are not unique to Nexgrill. In February, Weber recalled 3.2 million grill brushes for the same hazard. The CPSC and health officials have warned about the hazard for years, noting that detached bristles are difficult to see on grill grates and can easily transfer to food. Once ingested, the thin metal wires can embed in the mouth, throat or gastrointestinal tract. Injuries sometimes require endoscopy or surgery to address.
