Requirements
  • The candidate must have the physical ability to perform the required work and be able to read and write.
  • The candidate must be at least 18 years old.
  • The candidate must have, or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet university and departmental driving standards.
  • The candidate must be able to travel and drive distances to pick up animal shipments from Pullman, Lewiston, or Spokane airports.
  • The candidate must be able to drive a one-ton lift-gate truck with a manual transmission.
  • The candidate must be able to wear respiratory protective equipment when required by research, occupational health and safety, or biosafety requirements.
  • The candidate must abstain from wearing or using scented products at work due to animal sensitivity and research requirements.
  • The candidate must be able to work a rotating schedule that may include weekends, after-hours periods, and holidays.
  • The employee must report to work during conditions such as inclement weather and suspended university operations.
  • The position requires employment eligibility in the United States; WSU employs U.S. citizens and lawfully authorized non-U.S. citizens.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine tasks related to the care, monitoring, handling, and feeding of animals.
  • Perform custodial duties within multiple university animal facilities.
  • Support vivarium users within the Integrated Vivarium Services Unit.
  • Provide animal care, custodial support, husbandry, technical services, and research support.
  • Drive periodically to regional airports to pick up animal shipments.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior husbandry experience with a wide range of animal species and experience working with animals in a research or teaching institution.
  • Experience managing rodent breeding colonies.
  • AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level or higher.
