Requirements
  • At least two years of experience in court reporting
  • Hold the National Court Reporters Association Registered Professional Reporter (NCRA RPR) certification or Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR) through the National Verbatim Reporters Association (NVRA) or equivalent certification
  • Must have: 225 words per minute dictation speed (steno) and ability to translate takedown from steno to English
  • Working knowledge of legal and medical terminology, correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic mathematics; knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing court reporting and transcription activities; ability to use court reporting and transcription equipment
  • Consecutive employment in a position with comparable responsibilities within the past five years (Virginia Court Reporter requirement)
  • High school diploma or GED; completion of apprentice and internship training in court reporting; sufficient coursework to obtain certification as a professional court reporter from a recognized licensing or accrediting agency or equivalent
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to submit to background checks and obtain relevant clearances; U.S. Citizenship required; able to communicate via email and proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat; able to operate with professional ethics; eligible for Facility Access Authorization; potential for security clearance up to Top Secret or Q level
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related tools; ability to work from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST Monday to Friday and flexibility to work outside those hours including weekends/holidays as needed
  • Must be able to administer oaths; real-time transcription capability; familiarity with court reporting tools and platforms
  • Proficient in English reading and writing; ability to read portions of transcripts during proceedings; be punctual and present for relevant proceedings
  • Experience with Administrative Investigation Board (AIB), Equal Opportunity Hearing, MSPB, or arbitration hearings preferred
Responsibilities
  • Provide verbatim transcription of testimony for various proceedings including fact-findings, review boards, hearings, investigations, depositions, arbitrations; testimony may be face-to-face or remote via video teleconference, telephone, or platforms like Microsoft Teams or Zoom for Government
  • Perform real-time transcription during live depositions or proceedings as requested
  • Stenographically record and produce accurate verbatim records of all proceedings; transcribe, proofread, and prepare transcripts for distribution using required court reporting tools and platforms; maintain exhibits during depositions
  • Attend depositions and other proceedings (online or in-person) requiring transcripts using new platform; provide rough drafts of transcripts to counsel/parties when requested; provide transcripts upon request to judges, lawyers, or the public
  • Collaborate with engagement team members, contracting officer representatives, firm management; test and provide feedback on virtual litigation platform; ensure deliverables meet client milestones
  • Record verbatim proceedings of courts and legislative bodies; prepare final transcript per client request; submit final ASCII via online portal; proofread transcripts for correct spelling; clarify inaudible statements with speakers
  • Coordinate with scopists and proofreaders for transcript completion; maintain exhibits; ensure timely delivery; ensure confidentiality and discretion in handling complex litigations
  • Travel to locations within 50 miles radius of Norfolk, Virginia; provide services at Agency offices or ships as required; majority of proceedings at Agency offices in Norfolk; flexibility to provide services in Hampton Roads area
