Requirements
  • A PhD, or a Master of Science degree plus 2 years of experience, or 3+ years of experience in statistics, computational social science, applied mathematics, economics, or another quantitative or computational discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience with open-source machine learning or statistical analysis tools.
  • At least 2 years of coding experience in Python.
  • At least 2 years of experience with SQL and manipulating large structured or unstructured datasets for analysis.
  • Experience with A/B testing or experimentation.
Responsibilities
  • Reframe business and newsroom goals as machine learning tasks that deliver accurate predictions, relevant insights, and optimization.
  • Implement and deploy machine learning research with robustness and reproducibility, considering risks and trade-offs.
  • Learn new technologies and machine learning methods and adapt them into team workflows.
  • Deploy models behind production application programming interfaces or batch processes, collaborate with engineering teams, and integrate models into processes throughout The New York Times.
  • Communicate complex machine learning ideas while collaborating with colleagues in engineering, analytics, product management, marketing, editorial, and executive leadership groups.
  • Support and understand the value of journalistic independence and demonstrate commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of experience applying machine learning to email campaigns, including optimizing timing, content selection, or audience creation.
  • At least 1 year of experience with recommendation systems, natural language processing, and large language models.
  • At least 1 year of experience translating ambiguous business questions into machine learning problems.
  • At least 1 year of experience building internal or consumer-facing data products.
