Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Previous customer service experience is required.
  • Basic typing speed of 45 words per minute, basic ten-key proficiency, and computer skills in a Windows environment are required.
  • Experience with multiple computer applications, operating systems, and office machines is required.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and confidentiality requirements, insurance payer regulations and requirements, patient rights, revenue cycle components, and the impact of accurate registration on patient satisfaction is required.
  • Analytical, organizational, prioritization, time-management, attention-to-detail, multitasking, composure, and change-adaptation abilities are required.
  • Emergency Department assignments require participation in a weekend standby rotation from Friday at 7 p.m. through Monday at 7 a.m., occurring two to six times per year.
Responsibilities
  • Greet and register patients accurately and efficiently.
  • Gather and enter demographic and insurance or billing information.
  • Verify insurance eligibility using online systems.
  • Provide and complete required patient forms.
  • Collect and enter payments and follow balancing procedures.
  • Analyze, interpret, and enter physician orders.
  • Scan and index forms.
  • Schedule and communicate appointment information for multiple facilities and ancillary departments.
  • Verify insurance for scheduled and urgent or emergent patients according to payer guidelines and obtain authorization based on payer-specific criteria.
  • Complete assigned work queues accurately.
  • Identify financial counseling needs and provide patients with financial information and price estimates.
  • Resolve patient financial issues and negotiate payment arrangements.
  • Maintain confidentiality in verbal, written, and electronic communication.
  • Follow established processes, protocols, and workflows.
  • Take initiative to resolve problems and meet patient needs.
  • Assist employees and visitors with concerns.
  • Assume responsibility for the safety and security of designated areas.
  • Monitor security cameras and identify and respond to potential security risks.
Desired Qualifications
  • Medical terminology, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10), coding knowledge are strongly preferred.
  • For Cancer Center assignments, an associate degree in a related field, or two years of related healthcare experience and/or training, is preferred.
  • For Cancer Center assignments, two years of business-office experience may be considered.
  • Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) certification is preferred.
