Requirements
- At least one year of patient care work experience in a healthcare facility, or one year of work experience in a 0.6 full-time equivalent GI Technical Specialist I position at MUSC CHS.
- A college or bachelor's degree, active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals, or active enrollment in an accredited healthcare-related field may satisfy the education and training requirement.
- Completion of a Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant course, equivalent training, or possession of Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic certification may satisfy the minimum training requirement.
- The applicant must be able to understand and implement detailed instructions for therapeutic procedures and make accurate physical observations of patients.
- The applicant must communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Basic computer skills are required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required within two weeks of hire or upon hire, and must thereafter be maintained through an American Heart Association certification or an American Red Cross certification for healthcare providers.
- The employee must be able to perform the listed physical functions, including standing, sitting, walking, bending, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted, and exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
- The employee must be able to maintain corrected 20/40 vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and hearing acuity.
- The employee must be able to deal effectively with stressful situations, work rotating shifts, and work overtime as required.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical support and assistance during GI procedures, including endoscopies, colonoscopies, and other diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
- Assist healthcare providers in positioning patients, preparing equipment, and monitoring patient vital signs during procedures.
- Ensure the availability, functionality, and cleanliness of GI equipment and instrumentation.
- Perform routine maintenance checks, troubleshoot equipment issues, and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, nurses, and other multidisciplinary team members to coordinate patient care before, during, and after GI procedures.
- Assist with patient preparation, monitoring, and recovery while ensuring patient comfort, safety, and confidentiality.
- Document procedural details, patient information, and equipment usage accurately in electronic medical record systems or other designated documentation platforms.
- Maintain organized records of procedures, equipment maintenance, and inventory levels to support quality assurance and compliance.
- Adhere to protocols, policies, and procedures related to GI procedures, infection control, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection control audits, and regulatory inspections.
- Stay informed about advancements in GI technology, procedures, and equipment through ongoing education and professional development.
- Provide training and mentorship to new staff members, residents, and fellows on GI procedures, equipment usage, and safety protocols.
Desired Qualifications
- Successful completion of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates modules for GI Technical Specialist within the specified time frame is desired.
