Responsibilities
  • Supervise the activities of a clinical laboratory section and ensure its smooth and efficient functioning.
  • Establish short-range plans within hospital-wide policy and common goals, referring matters requiring clarification, interpretation, or exceptions to senior management.
  • Use laboratory equipment and software safely and competently, including entering patient, billing, and specimen information into Sunquest and Eclipses.
  • Prioritize workflow according to medical necessity and specimen priority, evaluating workload and making staffing changes as needed.
  • Perform testing, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation, and ensure instruments operate within established guidelines.
  • Process and package specimens according to procedure manuals and age-specific requirements, report results according to specimen priority, and review quality assurance, quality control, and maintenance data.
  • Provide appropriate turnaround times and communicate testing delays to caregivers; evaluate and improve laboratory processes.
  • Perform phlebotomies and urine drug screens, including special collections; maintain inventory and receive, label, and restock supplies.
  • Participate in activities that improve laboratory quality indicators and patient outcomes, including professional organizations or instrumentation training.
  • Evaluate the need for, participate in the selection of, and implement new instrumentation, including developing and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Make recommendations for departmental budgets, capital needs, staffing, and action plans, and provide coverage for the Laboratory Director when absent.
  • Develop employee orientation, training, and competency-maintenance programs, and prepare documents and coordinate instruction and evaluation of laboratory students.
