Weyerhaeuser advances forest-based climate solutions at Climate Week NYC.

Weyerhaeuser advances forest-based climate solutions at Climate Week NYC. Weyerhaeuser strengthened its role in discussions on forest-based climate solutions during Climate Week NYC, held from 20 to 27 September. The company's Sustainability and Strategic Land Solutions teams participated in nearly a dozen speaking engagements over four days, alongside partner meetings and industry discussions. The annual gathering attracted more than 100,000 attendees and featured over 1,500 events across New York City. Business leaders, policymakers, environmental organisations and sustainability professionals examined approaches to addressing climate change. For Weyerhaeuser, the event marked another step in its efforts to advance the role of working forests in climate action. Its participation has evolved from raising awareness to contributing to discussions that influence carbon markets, investment decisions and environmental policy. From participation to industry influence. Weyerhaeuser first attended Climate Week NYC in 2023, when it announced approval of its first forest carbon project in Maine. The initial objective was to introduce wider audiences to the climate benefits and carbon potential of working forests. The company subsequently expanded its engagement. It supported calls for greater integrity in voluntary carbon markets and published principles outlining its approach to carbon credits. It also released greenhouse gas inventory principles for assessing the carbon impacts of its forest and forest products portfolio. These science-based guidelines were designed to provide a framework for other industry participants. Progress has extended beyond policy discussions. Approvals were secured for the company's first forest carbon projects in the US South, while additional projects entered development. Renewable energy initiatives advanced, conservation agreements were established, and a joint venture was launched to accelerate the biocarbon market. The company's partner network has also expanded. By the time its team planned this year's schedule, all but one of its engagements had been arranged through invitations. Sarah Fulcher, director of carbon marketing, has coordinated Weyerhaeuser's Climate Week NYC participation since 2024. She said the company had progressed from attending events to helping influence the agenda around working forests as climate solutions. Forest certification and nature-related investment. One of the key engagements took place on 22 September at the International Sustainable Forestry Coalition Symposium, hosted by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative(R). The panel, titled "Financing Forests: Certification as the Bridge to Investment and Nature Disclosure", examined the relationship between forest certification, nature-related disclosures and investment. Vaughan Andrews, senior manager of sustainability, was among four invited panellists. He highlighted growing investor interest in understanding the effects of forest management on nature. Andrews also emphasised the importance of recognising established forest certification systems and decades of work supporting sustainable forest management. Such approaches seek to balance societal needs, environmental priorities and the livelihoods of communities dependent on forests. He argued that nature-related reporting requirements should account for the existing frameworks and experience underpinning responsible forest management. Advancing high-integrity forest carbon projects. Another major engagement was a breakfast roundtable hosted by Weyerhaeuser and its partner, Relae, on 24 September. Alicia Robbins, vice-president of climate solutions and business development, and Jason Gibson, director of forest carbon, led discussions on designing high-integrity Improved Forest Management (IFM) projects. Participants examined emerging market trends and considered how demand and project development are influencing one another. Weyerhaeuser currently has five IFM projects issuing credits, including four in the US South. Three southern projects were recently recognised as among the best in their class by BeZero Carbon, a carbon credit ratings agency. Several additional projects remain under development. Fulcher noted that voluntary carbon markets are evolving as customers increasingly demand higher-quality credits. She also highlighted the need for developers and other market participants to establish clearer expectations around acceptable quality and best-in-class performance. The discussion reflected wider industry efforts to improve credibility and strengthen confidence in voluntary carbon credits. Wider engagement across climate and sustainability forums. Weyerhaeuser representatives contributed to several other discussions throughout the week. Robbins joined a Nature Conservancy panel on climate-smart forestry and a Goldman Sachs-hosted dinner examining how sustainability strategies and corporate resilience can attract investor interest. Ara Erickson, vice-president of corporate sustainability, participated in a Nature4Climate Coalition panel exploring market mechanisms and financing for wildfire resilience in forests and rural communities. Gibson joined a workshop hosted by SCS Global Services, which highlighted the continuing importance of emissions reductions alongside the growing focus on carbon removals. Fulcher co-hosted a roundtable with BeZero Carbon, bringing carbon credit buyers and sellers together to discuss market challenges. Andrews participated in a strategic workshop organised by the Science for High Integrity Frameworks to Transform Carbon Markets and spoke on a Climate Contribution Framework panel about broader approaches to evaluating corporate climate action. These engagements connected the company with investors, environmental organisations, policymakers and other industry stakeholders. Partnerships remain central to climate action. Beyond formal presentations, Climate Week NYC provided opportunities to strengthen relationships with existing partners and engage with decision-makers. In-person discussions were considered particularly valuable for addressing complex market issues and building the trust needed to advance shared climate objectives. Weyerhaeuser's expanding participation reflects its broader strategy of positioning working forests as part of the response to climate change. The company continues to develop forest carbon projects while pursuing renewable energy initiatives, conservation agreements and biocarbon opportunities. Fulcher observed that the company's focus had shifted considerably over three years. Rather than simply identifying relevant audiences and events, Weyerhaeuser is increasingly contributing to discussions with partners and stakeholders that could shape future climate solution markets. Its engagement at Climate Week NYC demonstrates the growing intersection of sustainable forest management, carbon market integrity and investment. These areas are expected to remain important to the development of credible, forest-based climate solutions. Letter: BEP should approve energy corridor conservation plan.

Letter: BEP should approve energy corridor conservation plan. Letters submitted by BDN readers are verified by BDN Opinion Page staff. Send your letters to [email protected] As a lifelong Mainer, landowner, and former director of the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission, I have spent decades studying and teaching land use planning and resource management. After reviewing the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) Conservation Plan, I believe it represents a thoughtful and meaningful commitment to conservation that deserves public support. What stands out most to me is the plan's permanent protection of 50,000 acres of forest land that will be connected to existing conservation lands in northwestern Maine. By preserving a large contiguous landscape and managing it to support long-term forest sustainability, the plan helps protect ecological values while offsetting impacts associated with construction of the transmission corridor. Equally important, the proposal demonstrates how complex infrastructure projects can be carried out responsibly when private landowners, businesses, and state agencies work together toward a common goal. I believe the partnership among Weyerhaeuser, NECEC, and the Department of Environmental Protection offers a practical example of balancing environmental stewardship with projects that provide broader public benefits. Maine has a long tradition of finding pragmatic solutions to challenging issues. I believe this conservation plan reflects that tradition. I encourage the Maine Board of Environmental Protection to approve the plan in full and help ensure that its environmental benefits are realized for generations to come. Paul B. Frederic Starks
