Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline is required.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia through EGBC or Alberta through APEGA, or the ability to obtain registration, is required.
  • 10–15 years of experience in high-voltage transmission and distribution underground cable systems is required.
  • Demonstrated experience acting as a technical lead or Professional-of-Record on transmission line or cable projects is required.
  • Strong expertise in underground cable design, including routing, duct banks, thermal analysis, bonding and grounding, and installation methodologies, is required.
  • Experience with urban routing, horizontal directional drilling installations, utility coordination, and permitting processes is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standards, and International Electrotechnical Commission standards, is required.
  • Understanding of occupational health and safety requirements is required.
  • Proficiency with relevant tools such as CYMCAP, ETAP, and AutoCAD is required.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities are required.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a deadline-driven environment is required.
  • Client-facing experience and strong communication and interpersonal capabilities are required.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, routing, design, and execution of underground transmission cable projects ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV.
  • Serve as Professional-of-Record, taking accountability for the technical accuracy, quality, and compliance of design deliverables.
  • Provide technical leadership for underground cable system design, including cable selection and ampacity analysis, thermal resistivity studies and installation design, cable routing, trenching and duct bank design, and jointing, termination, and transition station design.
  • Lead the development, review, and approval of route selection studies, feasibility assessments, plan and profile drawings, duct bank and trench designs, joint bay designs, termination and transition station designs, installation details, and construction packages.
  • Oversee and review advanced engineering analyses, including cable ampacity and thermal performance using tools such as CYMCAP, short-circuit and sheath bonding analysis, induced voltage and grounding studies, and cable pulling and installation calculations.
  • Provide leadership in constructability, focusing on urban constraints, horizontal directional drilling installations, crossings, and permitting considerations.
  • Develop and approve design criteria, technical specifications, and engineering reports.
  • Act as a key technical interface with clients, utilities, and stakeholders to support project delivery and business development.
  • Support proposals through scoping, estimating, and development of technical approaches for underground cable opportunities.
  • Lead client meetings, routing workshops, and technical design reviews.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, Engineers-in-Training, and designers.
  • Review and approve vendor submissions and coordinate with cable suppliers and installers.
  • Provide senior engineering support during construction, including site reviews, requests for information responses, and resolution of complex field issues.
  • Coordinate with overhead, civil, geotechnical, environmental, permitting, and utility teams to ensure integrated and constructible designs.
  • Ensure projects are delivered within scope, schedule, and budget while maintaining quality standards.
  • Champion safety-by-design, quality, and continuous improvement across all work.

Clearlake acquires power grid services platform Qualus from New Mountain Capital

Clearlake Capital Group has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Qualus Corporation, a power and electric grid services platform, from New Mountain Capital. Financial terms were not disclosed. Qualus provides integrated advisory, planning, engineering, digital solutions and field services supporting grid resiliency and sustainability. The company serves investor-owned utilities and commercial organisations, addressing technical complexity created by economic electrification and surging power demands. New Mountain Capital supported Qualus over the past five years during a period of significant growth. The acquisition will be financed by Apollo, Goldman Sachs Alternatives and Clearlake as joint lead arrangers. Clearlake manages over $185 billion in assets and focuses on operational improvements through its O.P.S. approach across multiple sectors.
