Essentia Health operates as a large non-profit, integrated health system serving rural communities across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. It runs 14 hospitals and 79 clinics plus long-term care, home health, and ambulance services, delivering primary care, heart and vascular, cancer care, orthopedics, obstetrics, and more, with support from digital health including extensive telehealth. The company earns revenue from patient care and increasingly from value-based care arrangements that tie payments to outcomes and costs. Its goal is to improve rural health access and outcomes by coordinating care across hospitals and clinics, reinvesting profits into community health, and expanding access through scale, IT, and partnerships.

Two major Minnesota healthcare providers, Essentia Health and HealthPartners, announced they are merging to create an organisation serving over 2 million patients. The combined entity will operate under the HealthPartners name starting in 2027, pending regulatory approval. The merger will unite 22 hospitals and more than 135 clinics across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. Duluth-based Essentia Health currently spans from Central North Dakota to Northeastern Wisconsin, whilst Bloomington-based HealthPartners focuses on the Twin Cities area and extends into Western Wisconsin. The organisations cited "significant financial headwinds" in healthcare and rising costs as drivers for the combination. They say the merger will improve care coordination, expand access, and address affordability concerns. Patients should expect no immediate changes to benefits or coverage during the regulatory review period through 2026.
