Dutch Bros tests walk-up-only windows as the drive-thru chain experiments with pedestrian traffic.

Dutch Bros tests walk-up-only windows as the drive-thru chain experiments with pedestrian traffic. Dutch Bros, a rapidly growing drive-through coffee chain noted for its vibrant drinks and engaging baristas, has initiated a strategy to draw in foot traffic by introducing walk-up-only windows. The first of these locations launched in November close to the University of Southern California, serving as a test for the concept. This site featured three distinct windows for ordering, pickup, and mobile orders, achieving the highest sales volume of any Dutch Bros shop until it was eclipsed by the first location in the Chicago area. Chief Financial Officer Josh Guenser indicated that the company is exploring similar walk-up establishments in densely populated areas to innovate its real estate approach. The venture reflects Dutch Bros' adaptability as it broadens its reach nationally. Established in southern Oregon in 1992 and now based in Tempe, Arizona, Dutch Bros has expanded significantly over the years, moving from its Pacific Northwest origins toward the east. As of June 30, the company operated 1,225 shops, marking a 17% annual increase, with an ambitious goal of reaching 2,029 locations by 2029. Standing out in the competitive market of customizable caffeinated beverages, Dutch Bros emphasizes exceptional customer service. Company greeters attend to patrons at their vehicles when lines emerge, while the baristas, referred to as "broistas," are encouraged to create enjoyable interactions, often blending small talk with music. The brand is also recognized for its assortment of brightly colored energy drinks, offering an extensive range of flavors and customizations, predominantly focusing on cold beverages. The design of its drive-through locations includes walk-up windows for mobile pickups, eliminating spaces for indoor dining. Despite inflation impacting broader household budgets, coffee chains like Dutch Bros have largely remained insulated from these challenges, as noted by analysts who describe coffee as an "affordable luxury." The company primarily retains ownership of its shops, using operational cash flow to underpin its growth momentum. In the latest quarter, revenue reached $550.9 million, a 32% increase from the previous year, while profit surged by 46% to $37.4 million. Acquisition strategies are integral to Dutch Bros' expansion plans, illustrated by its $20 million purchase of 20 locations from Clutch Coffee in the Carolinas. This acquisition aids the company in securing real estate and accelerating market entries. However, competition is intensifying from rivals such as 7 Brew and larger chains like Starbucks, which is refreshing its offerings. Analysts express concerns that these competitive pressures may hinder Dutch Bros' ambitious growth projections, predicting a potential shortfall of about 300 locations from its 2029 target. Looking forward, Dutch Bros aims to operate up to 7,000 drive-through locations across the nation, though it remains uncertain whether the introduction of additional walk-up windows will expand the company's market potential.
