Job Description

Nevada State University invites applications for the position of Student Worker - Peer Academic Coach for the Academic Success Center (ASC). The mission of the ASC is to provide academic guidance through FREE peer-to-peer support via tutoring, embedded course support, peer academic coaching, and study/test-taking strategies for a variety of subject areas.

Peer Academic Coaches serve students in need of support - outside of course content - to create academic goals, build action plans, and develop strength-based skills and habits in order to support persistence/retention.

Academic Coaching provides individualized support to help students develop self-regulation and effective learning and college skills based on the students’ needs, interests, and goals.

Peer Academic Coach will guide students to:

• Assess and identify individual student strengths and areas for growth that support their academic success.
• Set clear SMART Goals that outline actionable and realistic steps towards goal completion.
• Identify effective learning tools and campus resources to support skill development, goal completion, or simply navigating college life.
• Check-in/reflect on goal progress, challenges and successes, and attend campus activities or events.

Peer Coaching is a great way to help others while learning more about academic support/learning theory, science-based study skills, planning and facilitating sessions, and teamwork.

Core Responsibilities:

Academic Coaching & Referrals

• Provide individualized academic success coaching sessions to students to assess their own performance and develop goal-oriented action plans.

• Provide weekly outreach, check-ins, and relevant communication to address student questions, concerns, and needs.

• Assist students to develop and implement learning strategies and study skills specific to individual needs.

• Support and advocate for the interest, needs, and rights for students at Nevada State to become academically successful.

Training & Development

• Participate in pre-semester training, ongoing training, and staff meetings (biweekly and monthly meetings).

• Complete institutional and federal training certifications related to position (e.g. FERPA, Title IX, etc.).

Front Desk & Customer Service

• Assist with front desk coverage and customer service (answering phones, scheduling appointments, referrals, etc.).

• Coordinate with program staff and NS departments to improve student success outcomes.

Center Marketing & Events

• Assist with marketing and advertising sessions to campus community.

• Represent Center services during campus events or student activities.

 Documentation & Tracking

• Document student interactions and attendance through tracking software.

• Maintain confidentiality of student records and service usage in compliance with FERPA standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Have earned an GPA of 3.0 or better over the last 2 semesters OR a cumulative GPA of 3.0 at Nevada State.
• Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in which you will hold the position.
• Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Complete at least 1 year (2 semesters) at Nevada State.
• Ability to present oneself professionally and interact with others in a courteous and respectful manner.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, learn and apply procedures and regulations.
• Ability to work and manage multiple duties, projects, and assignments while meeting established deadlines.
• Ability to work in a high-paced, noisy environment.

Work Hours:

This position will work 10-19.5 hours per week depending on student traffic/demand and department budget; flexible scheduling with work schedule to be arranged. Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week.

Hourly Rate:
$14.00 per hour.
