About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Tooling Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • At least 3 years of tooling, die casting, manufacturing engineering, or related experience.
  • Knowledge of die construction, die materials, cooling, gating, venting, ejection, and die failure mechanisms.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as NX, Creo, SolidWorks, CATIA, or AutoCAD.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, communication, and project-management skills.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and manage high-pressure die casting (HPDC) dies and tooling from concept through production.
  • Review product designs for die castability, manufacturability, and tooling feasibility.
  • Review and improve die designs, including parting lines, slides, cores, ejectors, cooling, gating, runners, overflows, and venting.
  • Support die trials, tooling launches, first-off inspections, and production start-ups.
  • Troubleshoot tooling-related defects such as flash, porosity, cold shuts, soldering, erosion, cracking, and dimensional variation.
  • Lead tooling improvements using root-cause analysis, 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone, and design of experiments (DOE).
  • Coordinate die repairs, modifications, and improvements with internal toolrooms and external suppliers.
  • Develop tooling specifications, requests for quotations (RFQs), and technical requirements for new projects.
  • Monitor tooling performance, die life, downtime, repair history, and maintenance costs.
  • Establish and improve preventive maintenance standards for dies and critical tooling.
  • Partner with Quality and Manufacturing Engineering to resolve tooling-related quality issues.
  • Support advanced product quality planning (APQP), production part approval process (PPAP), process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), Control Plans, and new product launches.
  • Maintain tooling drawings, specifications, revisions, and technical documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce scrap, cycle time, tooling costs, and downtime while improving overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and die life.
  • Comply with safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements in a work environment that includes manufacturing-floor and toolroom interaction, with possible exposure to heat, noise, moving equipment, molten metal, and machining operations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with high-pressure aluminum or magnesium die casting is preferred.
  • Experience with tooling suppliers and toolroom operations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of casting simulation, vacuum die casting, computer numerical control (CNC) and electrical discharge machining (EDM) processes, and die coatings is a plus.

About the company

Orion Casting manufactures metal components for equipment makers, with high-pressure casting operations for aluminum, magnesium and zinc parts. It supplies components for products ranging from vehicles and outdoor equipment to lighting and appliances, with machining, finishing and assembly available within the same manufacturing group. Customers buy custom parts and finished assemblies, and the company combines production services so manufacturers have fewer separate suppliers to coordinate. Dedicated project managers coordinate production planning with customers, designers and suppliers. Established in 2026, Orion has its North American headquarters in Grafton, Wisconsin.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Machines adjust from measurements: Orion's machining equipment checks parts during production and makes automatic corrections.
  • Salaried employees have bonus access: Orion lists annual bonus potential for all salaried employees.
  • Engineers stay close to manufacturing: Orion assigns product-development technical expertise to every production site.

What critics are saying

  • North Billerica operators face overnight work: Orion's second-shift schedule runs from 4 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.
  • Hourly incentive pay is selective: Orion reserves monthly performance bonuses for top hourly performers.
  • North Billerica operators face physical demands: the role requires prolonged workstation time and frequent lifting up to 20 pounds.

What makes Orion Casting unique

  • Orion checks assemblies automatically: vision systems, force monitoring and pressure tests identify defective parts.
  • Orion builds tooling backups: its company-owned tool shops add redundancy to tool production.
  • Orion casts internal features directly: tubes, threaded inserts and engine liners become part of the casting.
