The company differentiates itself by focusing on ease of use for non-designers and expanding its assets and capabilities through acquisitions such as Pexels, Pixabay, Flourish, and the Affinity suite. Its goal is to help anyone create professional-looking visuals quickly and collaboratively, without needing advanced design skills.

Canva cuts revenue growth forecast by a third as AI costs force rollout slowdown

Canva has cut its revenue growth forecast by a third to 20% after unexpectedly high AI costs forced the design-software company to slow its rollout of generative AI features. CEO Melanie Perkins said user demand for AI features "significantly exceeded" expectations, prompting Canva to rebuild its architecture and reduce unit costs before a broader rollout. The company has reduced cost per AI task by nearly 90% since launching Canva AI 2.0 in April. The issue reflects a wider challenge across the software industry. AI is breaking the traditional software-as-a-service model by introducing substantial recurring inference costs, undermining the zero-marginal-cost economics that previously drove profitability. Figma faces similar pressures, with its free-cash-flow margin falling from 27% to 14% between the first and second quarters. The timing is significant as Canva evaluates a potential IPO following a $42 billion employee share sale valuation last year.
