About the job

Requirements
  • A PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field is required.
  • Knowledge of catalysis, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and reactor/reaction engineering relevant to fuel synthesis and energy conversion is required.
  • Ability to design and operate catalytic and/or electrocatalytic reactors is required.
  • Ability to synthesize and characterize materials is required.
  • Ability to model and analyze process performance is required.
  • Proficiency in Python or an equivalent programming language is required.
  • Ability to work independently and across disciplines is required.
Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct research developing alternative fuels and advancing energy-innovation technologies, using catalysis and reaction-engineering approaches to target low-carbon fuel pathways across catalyst and process development, reactor design and scale-up, and performance and techno-economic assessment.
  • Develop catalytic and/or electrocatalytic routes and materials for alternative-fuel production, including hydrogen, ammonia, electro-fuels, and CO₂- or biomass-derived fuels, including synthesis, testing, and kinetic measurement.
  • Design, build, and operate bench- and laboratory-scale reactors and energy-conversion testbeds, evaluating activity, selectivity, stability, and energy efficiency under realistic operating conditions.
  • Develop reaction and reactor models and conduct process analysis, including techno-economic and life-cycle assessment, to guide designs toward scalable, low-carbon fuel pathways.
  • Characterize materials and analyze performance data to establish structure–performance and process–performance relationships.
  • Disseminate results through peer-reviewed publications and presentations, contribute to proposals and reports, help mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers, and steward shared instrumentation.
  • Contribute to scholarly publications, sponsored-research deliverables, and the training of graduate and undergraduate researchers.

What believers are saying

  • The July 2026 New York City campus launch expands admissions, brand, and employer access immediately.
  • The 840 Columbus residence hall adds 1,215 beds, supporting Boston enrollment growth through 2027.
  • Massachusetts awarded Northeastern $207,538.62 in FY26 safety research funding, validating its public-policy research engine.

What critics are saying

  • March 2025 hiring slowdowns and conservative FY26 budgets signal ongoing cost pressure.
  • Loss of two USAID grants in 2025 cuts research revenue and weakens federally funded labs.
  • Trade-secret litigation and Stephen Stoute appeals distract leadership and can escalate legal costs in FY27.

What makes Northeastern unique

  • Northeastern fused Marymount Manhattan on July 9, 2026, adding a New York City degree-granting campus.
  • Its co-op model still dominates experiential learning, anchoring employer relationships across campuses.
  • The network spans Boston, Oakland, London, and New York, widening student mobility and recruiting reach.
