Requirements
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Paramedic training.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working as an EMT Paramedic is preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications are required.
  • Ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Familiarity with computer use.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience providing direct patient care is preferred.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential.
  • Ability to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking; lift and carry 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; push a stretcher or wheelchair with an average adult patient; perform frequent stooping and occasional crouching, crawling, or kneeling; reach reasonable distances; run in emergency situations; move fingers in a coordinated manner; and perceive temperature, texture, shape, and size with the fingertips.
  • Ability to work with exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals, hazardous materials, and cleaning solutions while wearing common protective or safety equipment.
  • Ability to receive delegation, work with team members, address conflict, and communicate with people of varied personalities.
Responsibilities
  • Provide compassionate care and support services under the supervision of a registered nurse and/or Emergency Department provider to promote patients’ physical and emotional comfort and healing.
  • Perform treatments and procedures within State Emergency Medical Services guidelines, hospital guidelines, and directions from Emergency Department providers and registered nurses.
  • Prioritize duties and take and record patients’ vital signs.
  • Administer personal care, including assisting patients with dressing, toileting, bathing, and use of bedside commodes, bedpans, or urinals.
  • Assist with cleansing wounds, setting up suture trays, and applying dressings.
  • Assist in calming and/or restraining patients with a physician order.
  • Obtain and deliver specimens to the laboratory.
  • Apply splints.
  • Observe patients and report completion of intravenous infusions, pain, nausea, shortness of breath, changes in vital signs, and changes in patient condition to registered nurses.
  • Perform 12-lead electrocardiograms.
  • Administer prescribed enemas and report results to the nurse.
  • Insert and remove intravenous lines.
  • Perform point-of-care testing.
  • Insert urinary catheters according to the stated patient-age and sex scope.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and their families and friends, answer questions within the scope of knowledge, and obtain information from appropriate sources when needed.
  • Accurately document care according to policies and procedures.
  • Accurately assign triage categories.
  • Follow hospital safety and infection-control policies, including standard precautions.
  • Use sterile and aseptic technique.
  • Maintain the unit in a clean and orderly manner by stocking assigned areas, cleaning equipment, and assisting with monthly and as-needed unit cleaning.
  • Apply safety principles and safe patient-handling and mobility concepts when ambulating, transferring, positioning, transporting, and assisting patients with range-of-motion activities.
  • Initiate and/or assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Answer and receive radio and telephone communications from emergency medical services personnel without relaying physician orders to them.
  • Provide airway-management care, including opening and maintaining airways; inserting oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway adjuncts; managing obstructed airways; performing oral, endotracheal, and tracheostomy-tube suctioning; applying and reading pulse oximeters; and applying and reading end-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring.
  • Administer oxygen using nasal cannulas, non-rebreather masks, mouth-to-barrier devices, and bag-valve masks according to policy and procedure.
  • Provide trauma-management care, including traction-splint application, cervical immobilization, soft-tissue management, and management of suspected fractures.
  • Provide cardiac-management care, including 12-lead electrocardiograms, manual and hands-off defibrillation, cardiac-monitor application, cardiac-monitor strip interpretation, synchronized cardioversion, pacing, observation of cardiac monitors, and recording and reporting monitor abnormalities.
  • Administer approved oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, rectal, or intravenous medications.
  • Complete initial and annual competencies for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations within the scope of service.
  • Participate in economical utilization of supplies and maintain equipment and nursing units in a clean and safe condition.
  • Support performance-improvement activities by serving on teams, assisting with measures, and implementing necessary changes.
  • Maintain performance, patient-satisfaction, employee-satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in performance evaluations.
  • Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook and adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards and all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Perform essential job functions safely, identify and reduce unsafe practices and risks, and take appropriate action to promote safety for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Use electronic mail, time-and-attendance software, learning-management software, and the intranet.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
