Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services-approved state or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Must hold all applicable state licensure, education, and training required for the role.
  • Must successfully complete the organization’s dialysis training program and CPR certification.
  • Must be able to perform frequent, prolonged standing, bend over, lift and move patients, assist with ambulation, push or pull equipment with up to 15 pounds of force, and lift solutions up to 30 pounds frequently and 40 pounds occasionally.
  • Must successfully complete the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis healthcare team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines and perform all tasks necessary to prepare machines and treatment areas for dialysis.
  • Provide patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures, disease processes, vascular access, treatment options, and home dialysis under appropriate supervision.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law, monitor access pressures, and apply interventions as needed.
  • Obtain and document pre-treatment and post-treatment vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluations, treatment parameters, and patient responses.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures, including blood flow, dialysate flow, ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and patient responses, provide prescribed interventions, and report significant changes or unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Ensure dialysis machine safety alarms are enabled and perform required machine alarm testing, including Pressure Holding Testing.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests, collect and prepare specimens, label and store samples according to laboratory specifications, and coordinate courier collection.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment by cleaning blood spills and disinfecting dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Prepare, organize, and use supplies and equipment efficiently; assist with supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision.
  • Complete and document Continuous Quality Improvement activities and enter treatment data accurately and promptly into the designated clinical application.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensure nursing signatures are documented, and correct or route omitted entries for completion.
  • Prepare initial patient charts and compile admission paperwork; prepare and print laboratory requisitions.
  • Collect information for infection control audits, support adherence to infection control practices, and reinforce infection control education for patients and families under appropriate supervision.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate their transitional dialysis care.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to support patient experience and ensure scheduled multidisciplinary care.
  • Set up and perform treatments on all machines used in the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup and assist patients in understanding home dialysis products, benefits, and treatment options.
  • Assist with coordinating each patient’s transition to their chosen dialysis modality.
  • Follow organizational policies, procedures, systems, ethical business practices, and infection control procedures.
