Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current pharmacy technician licensure or a pharmacy technician trainee permit/license is required according to the state board where services are provided.
  • National certification as a pharmacy technician through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcareer Association is required, or must be obtained within 15 months of hire for applicants with at least two years of pharmacy-specific experience.
  • The employee must be able to walk and stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • The employee must be able to lift 30 pounds and push 50 pounds.
  • Dexterity is required to finger, handle, and reach.
Responsibilities
  • Read physicians' orders, prepare and deliver medications, and order and deliver drug supplies for various patient-care units.
  • Prepare medications for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for all patient populations.
  • Understand standard pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols used in prescribing and dispensing medications.
  • Interpret medication lists to replenish patient medications and deliver them to patient-care areas according to schedule.
  • Prepare and deliver controlled substances accurately and maintain all necessary records.
  • Take inventory and analyze medication supplies, replace outdated or deteriorated medications, and replenish depleted inventory.
  • Label products appropriately.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations in medication and solution preparation.
  • Perform an initial check of prescribed doses for appropriateness based on patient weight and age.
  • Prepare and label prepackaged medications, determine usage patterns and prepackaging requirements, and maintain related records.
  • Maintain inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy service areas.
  • Answer telephone calls and route them to the appropriate individual.
  • Keep pharmacy service areas and drug storage areas clean and orderly.
  • Assist in training pharmacy technicians.
  • Follow state and federal restrictions governing duties that may only be performed by pharmacists.
  • Assist with sterile preparation of intravenous room medications and maintain and clean the intravenous room.
  • Prepare intravenous admixtures, including pediatric dilutions, injectable preparations, and sterile irrigating solutions, using aseptic technique.
  • Enter information related to parenteral admixtures and other injectable products into pharmacy intravenous computer systems.
  • Manage controlled substances for the health system.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree, post-high-school education in a science field, or graduation from a pharmacy technician training program is preferred.
  • National pharmacy technician certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcareer Association upon hire is preferred.
