Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate is required.
  • Meet Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services-approved state or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Maintain all appropriate state licensure, education, and training required for the role.
  • Complete the organization’s dialysis training program successfully as a condition of continued employment.
  • Complete CPR certification successfully as a condition of continued employment.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the organization’s culture, values, and customer service standards.
  • Meet the physical requirements of direct patient care, including frequent standing, bending, lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, and lifting solutions and equipment up to the stated limits.
  • Pass the Ishihara color blindness test, with reasonable accommodations considered where applicable.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis healthcare team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines, including conducting pretreatment alarm testing and initiating the Solution Delivery System.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform vascular access cannulation, administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law, and monitor arterial and venous pressures.
  • Obtain and document pre-treatment and post-treatment vital signs, weights, vascular access assessments, treatment parameters, and patient evaluations.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures, including blood-flow and dialysate-flow settings, ultrafiltration programming, reinfusion, hemostasis, and dressings.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, monitor patient responses, perform prescribed interventions, and report significant changes or unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Enable required safety alarms, including Narrow Venous Limits, and perform machine safety checks according to facility policy.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and collect, label, prepare, store, and route specimens according to laboratory specifications.
  • Complete hemodialysis treatment sheets, progress notes when applicable, patient charts, laboratory requisitions, and designated clinical application records accurately and timely.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment by cleaning and disinfecting dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments and immediately cleaning blood spills with appropriate disinfectant.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment, including ordering and maintaining inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities, infection-control audits, process-improvement activities, and patient and family infection-control education under appropriate direction.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate their transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education about disease processes, vascular access, treatment options, and home dialysis products and benefits as permitted by state law.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to support the patient experience and ensure that disciplines are scheduled according to the care plan.
  • Set up and perform treatments on all machines used in the Transitional Care Unit, demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup, and assist with transitions to the patient’s selected modality.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various community locations and attend regional, business-unit, or corporate meetings when required.
