Requirements
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Rhode Island or licensure as a Registered Nurse under the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement.
  • Graduate of a school of nursing with a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Rhode Island.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide care that considers aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns throughout the care process.
  • Experience working with students with emotional and behavioral disorders and developmental disabilities, including intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorders.
  • Current certification in crisis management.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
Responsibilities
  • Provide acute and long-term nursing care to children and adolescents, patients, families, and the program milieu according to program, department, and hospital standards.
  • Assess patients’ immediate, long-term, and acute biopsychosocial nursing needs; initiate and complete the nursing assessment within eight hours of admission and document it in the required medical-record format.
  • Communicate significant changes in assessment findings and patient or milieu status to the nurse in charge and appropriate healthcare providers, and summarize patient status in team meetings and reports.
  • Plan treatment interventions with patients, families, and the healthcare team; initiate the patient care plan at admission and complete it within eight hours according to admission procedures.
  • Develop and update each shift’s patient care plan by setting patient and family treatment goals, identifying nursing interventions and strengths, identifying inpatient and aftercare needs, and formulating measurable short- and long-term goals with timelines.
  • Plan for patient and staff safety according to hospital procedures.
  • Establish and maintain individual and milieu-based therapeutic alliances and document them through ongoing documentation and clinical supervision.
  • Advocate for patients by supporting the Patient Bill of Rights and child mental health law.
  • Maintain technical and psychiatric specialty skills appropriate to the clinical program and provide direct patient care in the therapeutic milieu.
  • Implement nursing care and interventions specified in the care plan within established time frames.
  • Follow policies, procedures, program protocols, and The Joint Commission standards to provide safe and effective care.
  • Educate patients about procedures before implementation.
  • Administer and document prescribed scheduled and as-needed medications according to medical protocol; assess and document medication effectiveness and side effects.
  • Accurately transcribe physician orders and implement them according to medical protocol.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of care and interventions based on patient responses, modifying interventions as needed.
  • Seek consultation and direction through established supervision channels to identify and resolve situations affecting patient outcomes and work relationships.
  • Collect quality assurance data accurately and contribute to program-based nursing quality assurance.
  • Communicate patient condition using behaviorally oriented procedures and respectfully question medical orders that conflict with ethical or patient-care standards.
  • Participate in the ongoing development and implementation of the therapeutic milieu and assess and respond to patient-group needs, including environmental safety and patient and staff interactions.
  • Respond immediately to requests for assistance beyond the unit when directed and according to program protocol.
  • Provide leadership during acute or emergency situations according to program standards and participate as a member of the Emergency Response Team.
  • Lead and co-lead therapeutic milieu groups, support individual patient participation, and organize and participate in informal patient groups for program-based milieu assessment.
  • Participate directly in the milieu program as a direct-care provider and organize the delivery of patient care.
  • Supervise Behavioral Health Specialists and support staff within their scope of practice and in accordance with The Joint Commission acute-care and program standards.
  • Prioritize interventions in rapidly changing patient situations and provide consistent unit leadership when assigned as nurse in charge.
  • Identify and address teaching needs of patients, families, and healthcare providers; review and document needs in the nursing care plan; provide basic and complex teaching and document patient responses.
  • Assist with orientation of new employees and students and provide instruction and demonstrations on therapeutic techniques, nursing procedures, and products.
  • Pursue professional growth and competency through ongoing professional-role development activities.
  • Manage time effectively, prioritize urgent issues, complete assigned work and projects promptly, and follow through on commitments.
  • Document required materials, maintain records, and distribute them to appropriate parties.
  • Follow the established work schedule and procedures for ensuring adequate coverage during absences.
  • Maintain current field knowledge and share it with the healthcare team in meetings, reports, and informal sessions.
  • Participate in the performance appraisal process by identifying short- and long-term professional goals with a supervisor.
  • Stay current with hospital and program changes by attending staff meetings and reviewing and acknowledging meeting minutes and new policies and procedures.
  • Follow hospital, department, and program policies and procedures.
  • Attend six program meetings per year as assigned, attend assigned program staff development and monthly Program Development Day presentations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of psychiatric nursing and/or pediatric nursing experience; experience is reviewed by the manager to determine eligibility.
