Arrowstreet Capital is a Boston-based investment manager that serves institutional investors by offering global equity investment strategies and fund products. The firm runs long-only, alpha extension, and long/short approaches and uses a wide set of instruments, including swaps and futures. Its investment process relies on quantitative methods to build diversified equity portfolios and to estimate expected return and risk, as well as the costs of trading. Portfolios are created with a mean-variance optimizer and proprietary risk and transaction cost models, with the aim of delivering value relative to each client’s benchmark. Arrowstreet manages about $100 billion for more than 200 client relationships across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

What believers are saying

  • Institutional demand for 130/30 and alpha extension strategies fits its platform.
  • Global diversified equity mandates support large-blend and ACWI-style allocations.
  • A broad pension, endowment, and foundation client base supports recurring mandates.

What critics are saying

  • Quant competitors compress fees and increase talent churn across institutional equity mandates.
  • Model decay and quant crowding erode alpha and weaken benchmark-relative performance.
  • Passive index outperformance and mega-cap concentration trigger redemptions from performance-sensitive allocators.

What makes Arrowstreet Capital unique

  • Quantitative global equity manager using proprietary return, risk, and transaction-cost models.
  • Offers long-only, alpha extension, and long/short strategies to institutional clients.
  • Uses swaps, futures, and foreign exchange tools for efficient benchmark management.
