Assistant Professor - Global Humanities

The Department of the Global Humanities at Suffolk University invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2027 in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). We seek a teacher-scholar with research focus in Global History, broadly defined. Applicants should be able to teach and lead initiatives related to one or more of the following topic areas: Africa; Europe and European empires; Latin America; the Middle East; and/or Russia/the Soviet Union. We are looking for candidates who can expand the Department’s history offerings beyond its current strengths in East Asian history and twentieth-century U.S. history.

We especially welcome candidates who could teach courses and lead initiatives in our Public History concentration for the History major;in other opportunities associated with the Department of the Global Humanities (e.g. with the Global Cultural Studies, Language, and/or Philosophyprograms);andinthe College of Arts and Sciences (e.g.Environmental Studies,Economics, Political Science/Legal Studies,Black Studies, Economics,and/orWomen’s and Gender Studies).Public history opportunities could include planning and leading Travel Seminars and Study Abroad/Away experiences and contributing to the already-established Bialystok Cemetery Restoration project. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring relevant experience and expertise thatcouldprepare them to cultivate apossiblepartnership with the new Holocaust Museum & Education Center (set to open in Boston in 2027) and/or to plan new public history, experiential learning, andservice learninginitiatives in the greater Boston area and beyond to create meaningful experiences and professional development opportunities for our students.

Candidates should provide evidence of commitment to excellent teaching and scholarly potential, including a research agenda and plans for peer-reviewed publication. Candidates should be broadly trained to teach courses across the Department curriculum in research methods, professional skill building, and at the introductory, upper, and capstone levels including courses supporting the University’s first year and general education program. The successful candidate will teach courses that support the History major and minor, including the Global History concentration and the Public History concentration, as well as the Global Cultural Studies major and minor. Thecandidate should be ready to contribute to a multidisciplinary department alongside students and faculty colleagues in History as well as in Languages, Global Cultural Studies, and Philosophy. In addition todemonstratingexcellence in teaching and research, the successful candidate is expected to advise and mentor undergraduates from a variety of disciplines and fields of interest within the Department, and engage in service with the Department,Collegeand University. The workload for this position is 45% teaching, 35% research, and 20% service with a 5-course teaching load per year.

Candidates must hold a PhD in History or a relevant field (e.g.EnvironmentalStudies;Black Studies; Global Studies; Latin American Studies; Studies of Women, Gender, & Sexuality; oranother relevantfield) by the beginning of the 2027-2028 academic year. ABD candidates in the final stages of completing their degrees will be considered. Experienceteachingundergraduate students preferred.
