  • High school diploma required
  • 1-2 years of closely related clinical experience or training/coursework in optometry, ophthalmology or related field required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • A 4-year college education, including related optometry, ophthalmology and/or technical training with certification by the registry of the Joint Commission of Allied Health in Personnel Ophthalmology, or other nationally recognized professional certifying body
  • or a 2-year college education in an appropriate science and 2 years of closely related laboratory experience preferred
  • CPR or obtain CPR Certification
  • Possesses basic knowledge of optics including plus and minus lenses and their use with patients who are myopic, hyperopic, and have astigmatism. Understands the problems of presbyopia and how to correct for this and age values associated with this.
  • Has intermediate ocular pharmacology knowledge of drops and medications used for eye examinations. Is able to identify the purpose of these commonly used medications including proper administration, dosage, durations, common side effects, and know hospital policy about shelf life of these medications. Knows common drugs used for ocular diseases such as glaucoma, infections, retina problems and steroid use. Has the understanding on how these medications work both within the eye and systemically.
  • Certification by the registry of the Joint Commission of Allied Health in Personnel Ophthalmology, or other nationally recognized professional certifying body required.
Responsibilities
  • The Diagnostic Technician is responsible for performing state-of-the-art diagnostic testing for all Faculty, Fellows and Residents at the Flaum Eye Institute/Department of Ophthalmology.
  • Technicians will perform technical testing, clinical support and patient care for various physician and sub-specialties throughout the eye institute.
  • May perform as Lead Technician.
  • Performs diagnostic testing or services in support of the following sub-specialties: cornea, comprehensive, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, oculo-facial plastics, retina, and resident education.

  • Fundus Photography
  • Visual Fields: Humphrey & Goldmann
  • Corneal Topography
  • Perform advanced testing and imaging per provider's request.
  • Ocular Biometry (IOL Master & A Scan)
  • External/Oculo-facial Plastics Photography
  • Ultra-Wide Field Fundus Imaging
  • Auto-Fluorescence Imaging
  • Color vision testing using Ishihara, D-15 and/or 100 Hue
  • As part of the diagnostic testing service, the individual will also assist with coverage for: Ultrasound Biomicrography (UBM & B Scan)
  • Fluorescein / ICG Angiography
  • Slitlamp & Gonio Biomicrography
  • Specular Biomicrography
  • Videography and Video editing
  • Retcam / Handheld Fundus Photography (Operating room imaging)
  • HRT/Confocal Imaging
  • Performs clinical-clerical office duties, which would include checking diagnostic schedules, data entry, checking for request forms in advance, printing up results and related administrative activities deemed necessary by the department.
  • Stocks rooms according to practice needs and adheres to hospital polices regarding locked items, sharps, checking medication for expired dates and opened dates.
  • It is the technician's responsibility to learn the necessary information for their job, to obtain certifications, and maintain this knowledge.
  • Approximately five percent of the employee's time is spent learning the necessary knowledge and acquiring skill sets that are part of their job; this may involve attendance to meetings and rounds.
  • New skill sets may be required as a technician progresses to different levels and with new developments in technology (new equipment purchases).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification for institute wide and international clinical trials.
