About the company

MediaNews Group runs a large network of local newspapers under the Digital First Media banner. It buys financially troubled papers and centralizes operations—newsrooms, printing, advertising, and distribution—to cut costs and improve efficiency. It differentiates itself through a debt-fueled consolidation strategy under Alden Global Capital, rather than competing mainly on local reporting. Its goal is to grow by acquisitions and improve profitability through cost-cutting while keeping a broad footprint of local titles.

Daily News, other outlets, allege Microsoft urged Open AI to steal journalists' work.

Daily News, other outlets, allege Microsoft urged Open AI to steal journalists' work. PUBLISHED: June 26, 2026 at 11:50 PM EDT UPDATED: June 26, 2026 at 11:56 PM EDT The New York Daily News and affiliated news outlets in MediaNews Group and Tribune Publishing Friday updated their copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that Microsoft egged on users to plagiarize their reporters' work. In an amended complaint filed in Manhattan Federal Court, lawyers for the news outlets and the New York Times accused OpenAI partner Microsoft of "expressly" encouraging users to republish reporting by journalists. "Microsoft intentionally induced OpenAI's infringement by actively encouraging OpenAI's infringement," the amended suit reads. The complaint cites an example involving Daily News Mets beat writer Abbey Mastracco. "[F]eel free to incorporate this information into your blog," ChatGPT is quoted in the paperwork, responding to a user who said they needed content about "what the Mets see in Julio Teheran." The News, The Times and affiliated outlets in Tribune Publishing and MediaNews Group, along with other outlets, are suing OpenAI for allegedly stealing the work of journalists. They allege that the tech behemoths' chatbots frequently distort the stolen work by providing incomplete or inaccurate summaries. The news outlets allege that OpenAI's theft hurt their ability to sell original content. "Defendants' illegal use and distribution of the Publishers' Works damages the Publishers' ability to attract and retain paying subscribers while at the same time eroding the Publishers' ability to engage in and maintain licensing agreements with other publishers of news and information," the complaint reads More and more people are turning to AI for their news, which the tech companies have acknowledged in the ongoing litigation. Frank Pine, executive editor at MediaNews Group, in a statement, said the examples highlighted in the amended complaint were self-explanatory. "The evidence continues to prove that OpenAI stole our journalism to help them become among the world's most valuable companies, and this updated legal filing is intended to shine the spotlight on precisely why they are liable for billions and billions of dollars in damages," Pine said. Lawyers for the news outlets in the litigation on Friday also moved to dismiss one of the allegations in the lawsuit, a claim of contributory copyright infringement. The News reached out to spokespeople for OpenAI and Microsoft, who have denied wrongdoing, for comment.

How Denver airport keeps TSA security lines at 12 minutes as others see hours-long wait times.

How Denver airport keeps TSA security lines at 12 minutes as others see hours-long wait times. DIA investments to install 34 security screening lanes using state-of-the-art technology pay off during shutdown. PUBLISHED: March 25, 2026 at 8:16 AM EDT UPDATED: March 25, 2026 at 8:30 AM EDT Tens of millions of dollars that Denver International Airport officials invested in reconfiguring security screening checkpoints have helped keep the airport relatively quick for travelers amid the double trouble of a spring break surge and the federal government shutdown. Security wait times at DIA over the past two weeks averaged 12 minutes, according to airport records. Travelers never waited longer than 35 minutes, and often got through in less than 10 minutes, airport officials said this week. That compares with chaos at other airports around the country, where lengthy Transportation Security Administration wait lines delayed travelers for hours. TSA officers have been forced to work without pay for weeks as the partial government shutdown, which started Jan. 31, drags on, leading to short staffing. The long lines prompted the Trump administration to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to help the TSA address backups at more than a dozen other airports. In Denver, a $2.1 billion overhaul of the signature white tent-topped main terminal included a security checkpoints makeover. DIA contractors installed 34 security screening lanes using the latest Artificial Intelligence-powered systems that allow passengers to keep laptops in their bags and facial recognition technology to speed processing. These replaced 42 old-style lanes. TSA teams can screen 180 to 240 passengers an hour per lane. DIA's west-side checkpoint opened in February 2024. The east-side checkpoint opened in August 2025. Before the terminal reconstruction is completed next year, airport officials plan to install another 12 screening lanes. After investing $60 million in the equipment for the two new checkpoints, DIA donated it to TSA along with manufacturer warranty, maintenance, and support services, officials said this week in an emailed statement. DIA made "significant investments in its checkpoint technology, which enhances the experience for every traveler passing through our airport," officials said. "However, these improvements do not diminish the critical role our federal TSA partners play in keeping operations smooth and secure." TSA officials did not respond to questions. During the shutdown, DIA last week struggled to deal with an unexpected Xcel Energy power outage that caused havoc for hundreds of travelers. But airport officials reported that "TSA workers are showing up to work at DIA." DIA rallied public support, launching a donations campaign that brought in more than 950 grocery and gas gift cards to help security officers working without pay handle daily living expenses. "We are grateful to the TSA employees who are continuing to come to work to maintain normal operations." RevContent feed.
