  • Strong understanding of cooled detector and Integrated Detector Cooler Assembly fundamentals, detector array characteristics, Read-Out Integrated Circuit interfaces, vacuum packaging, and cryocooler integration sufficient to make sound trade-off decisions and flag risks.
  • Solid knowledge of camera electronics architecture and analog/digital design, including front ends, biasing, power, clocking, and data interfaces, sufficient to define requirements, review designs, and troubleshoot at the bench.
  • Solid knowledge of camera firmware and embedded software architecture, including image correction and processing functions such as Non-Uniformity Correction, bad-pixel replacement, auto-exposure/auto-gain, and basic image enhancement.
  • Demonstrated ability to define and negotiate electrical, optical, mechanical, and environmental requirements with customers.
  • Ability to obtain an active U.S. Department of Defense Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as a primary technical authority for Attollo's short-wave infrared and mid-wave infrared camera products and related sensor technologies, making judgments on quality, design trade-offs, and risk based on broad industry experience.
  • Work directly alongside engineers in the lab on assembly, integration, validation, testing, and hardware, firmware, and software troubleshooting.
  • Lead and contribute to technical design reviews across hardware, firmware, software, and optics, including Preliminary Design Reviews, Critical Design Reviews, and Test Readiness Reviews.
  • Define and refine electrical, optical, mechanical, firmware, and environmental requirements for new and existing products.
  • Drive resolution of difficult cross-disciplinary problems spanning optics, electronics, firmware, image processing, and integration.
  • Engage with defense primes, mid-tier integrators, and government laboratory customers to solve problems and develop new product concepts.
  • Lead technical content for proposals by writing key sections and coordinating contributions from other engineers.
  • Anticipate customer needs and translate them into actionable engineering requirements.
  • Represent Attollo at design reviews, customer site visits, technical conferences, and industry working groups.
  • Mentor and develop engineers across disciplines and levels, and build the next generation of technical leadership.
  • Contribute to engineering policies, procedures, and best practices using lightweight processes appropriate for a small company.
  • Identify capability gaps and propose targeted investments in people, equipment, or training.
  • Identify, evaluate, and champion new technologies relevant to Attollo's strategic direction.
  • Lead conceptual development of new products from requirements definition through architecture and early prototyping, bridging strategic roadmap with tactical execution on active programs.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree is preferred.
  • Cooled short-wave infrared or mid-wave infrared experience is strongly preferred over uncooled-only experience.
  • Active or recently active Department of Defense security clearance at Secret level or higher.
  • Direct experience with handheld target locator modules, fire control systems, weapon sights, gimbaled Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance payloads, or guided munition seekers.
  • Experience leading or contributing to Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer or other government research and development proposals.
  • Experience with field-programmable gate array-based camera architecture and image processing pipelines.
  • Direct experience with cryocooler integration, vacuum packaging design, and detector-level testing and characterization.
  • Experience working in an International Traffic in Arms Regulations environment.

What believers are saying

  • Safran raised 2026 revenue guidance above €36 billion after H1 organic growth exceeded 20%.
  • September 2026 Akira investment and Syntony acquisition deepen propulsion and resilient navigation capabilities.
  • Electra’s 250-unit TG600 order and Morocco’s new landing-gear plant expand future production pipelines.

What critics are saying

  • GE Aerospace dependence exposes CFM margins and deliveries if LEAP quality issues reappear in 2027.
  • French surtax and Europe’s industrial costs keep draining cash despite 2026 guidance upgrades.
  • A long Airbus narrowbody slowdown would crush Safran’s aftermarket; propulsion becomes the existential single point of failure.

What makes Safran unique

  • CFM International with GE still anchors Safran’s dominant LEAP and aftermarket franchise.
  • Safran combines propulsion, landing gear, avionics, and defense under one industrial platform.
  • Safran’s ENGINeUS certification and Hydrogen-electric work with ZeroAvia widen future propulsion optionality.

Electra secures Safran deal for 250 TG600 turbogenerators to power EL9 hybrid-electric aircraft

Electra and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a life-of-program production agreement for the TG600 turbogenerator to power Electra's EL9 Ultra Short hybrid-electric aircraft. The deal includes an initial order for 250 units. The TG600, which will supply 600 kW of electricity, will be based on Safran's Arrano engine and equipped with two GENeUS electric generators. Safran completed the first bench test of a flight-ready turbogenerator in July at its Bordes facility. The EL9 Ultra Short is designed to take off and land in just 150 feet using hybrid-electric propulsion and blown-lift technology. Electra has submitted the aircraft to the Federal Aviation Administration for Part 23 type certification, with first flight scheduled for late 2027 or early 2028 and entry to service expected in 2030.

Safran secures $16.6M EU funding to automate electric aviation engine production

Safran Electrical & Power has secured €14.7 million in funding from the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment to automate production of its ENGINeUS electric motor. The seven-year ENGINeUS PULL project, running from 2026 to 2032, aims to support sustainable aviation and the EU's carbon neutrality goals for the sector by 2050. Certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency in 2025, the ENGINeUS motor is now ready for series production. Safran will establish two semi-automated assembly lines at its Niort facility, along with logistics, maintenance and repair resources. The modular engine is designed to provide electric propulsion for two- to four-passenger aircraft and distributed hybrid-electric propulsion for 19-passenger regional aircraft.

Safran to supply certified electric motor for H55's Bristell B23 Energic propulsion system

H55 and Safran Electrical & Power have signed an agreement to integrate Safran's ENGINeUS electric motor into H55's electric propulsion system for the Bristell B23 Energic aircraft. The collaboration targets certified electric propulsion solutions for CS-23/Part 23 Level 1 and 2 general aviation aircraft. The partnership combines Safran's EASA-certified electric motor technology with H55's energy storage and propulsion integration capabilities. The Bristell B23 Energic will serve as the initial certification platform, targeting the electric pilot training market. Safran will support prototype and serial production phases beginning in 2027. ENGINeUS is the only certified electric motor in the aviation market, whilst H55 has completed the only battery architecture to undergo EASA-witnessed module testing. The Bristell B23 is already certified under both EASA and FAA regulations.
