Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of software engineering experience, or equivalent, in performance-critical systems.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning inference internals, including attention, multilayer perceptrons, recurrent modules, quantization, and sparse operations.
  • Hands-on experience with CUDA, GPU programming, and libraries such as cuBLAS, cuDNN, and NCCL.
  • Experience designing and operating distributed systems, including remote procedure call frameworks, queuing, remote procedure call batching, sharding, and memory partitioning.
  • Ability to identify and solve performance bottlenecks across kernels, memory, networking, and schedulers.
  • Experience building instrumentation, tracing, and profiling tools for machine learning models.
  • Ability to work closely with machine learning researchers and translate novel model ideas into production systems.
  • Ownership mindset and willingness to work deeply on complex systems challenges.
Responsibilities
  • Design and implement the inference engine and collaborate on a model-serving stack optimized for large-scale large language models.
  • Collaborate with researchers to bring new model architectures and features, including sparsity, activation compression, and mixture-of-experts, into the engine.
  • Optimize latency, throughput, memory efficiency, and hardware utilization across graphics processing units and accelerators.
  • Build and maintain instrumentation, profiling, and tracing tools to identify bottlenecks and guide optimizations.
  • Develop and enhance scalable routing, batching, scheduling, memory-management, and dynamic-loading mechanisms for inference workloads.
  • Support reliability, reproducibility, and fault tolerance in inference pipelines, including A/B launches, rollback, and model versioning.
  • Integrate with federated and distributed inference infrastructure by orchestrating across nodes, balancing load, and handling communication overhead.
  • Collaborate with platform engineers, cloud infrastructure teams, and security and compliance teams.
  • Document and share learnings and contribute to internal best practices and open-source efforts when possible.
Desired Qualifications
  • Published research or open-source contributions in machine learning systems, inference optimization, or model serving.

Databricks provides a unified data and AI platform built around a lakehouse architecture that blends data lakes and data warehouses. It helps organizations ingest, store, manage, and analyze data from various sources, then apply analytics and machine learning at scale. The platform offers automated ETL, secure data sharing, and high-performance analytics, with built-in support for AI workloads and model deployment. Unlike traditional single-purpose data stores, Databricks combines data engineering, data science, and business analytics in one system, aiming to streamline data workflows and make insights readily actionable. Its goal is to enable businesses to manage data more efficiently, accelerate insight generation, and deploy AI and analytics across diverse teams through a subscription-based platform and professional services.

Databricks' $190B valuation under scrutiny as analyst estimates $68.7B operating value

A new PitchBook report argues that Databricks' $190 billion valuation is too steep, estimating the company's actual operating value at around $68.7 billion — a 64% discount. Senior analyst Harrison Rolfes projected Databricks' revenue and cash flow over 10 years, forecasting the company will generate $9.3 billion annually by 2035. Even under the most optimistic scenario, assuming 80% gross margins and continued growth, the analysis values Databricks at only $182.1 billion. In August, Databricks raised $5 billion at the $190 billion valuation, led by Coatue. The company's annualised run rate increased 29.6% to $7 billion over six months. Databricks trades at 27 times its run rate, compared to competitor Snowflake's 20 times multiple. Whilst Databricks grows faster, Snowflake's audited figures provide more transparency than Databricks' self-reported numbers.

Pengana's AIX acquires 8% stake in $190B AI platform Databricks

ASX-listed AI Private Opportunities Trust has acquired a position in Databricks, allocating approximately 8% of its portfolio to the US data and AI company. San Francisco-based Databricks raised $5 billion in August 2024 at a $190 billion valuation. The platform serves over 70% of Fortune 500 companies and more than 20,000 organisations worldwide. Databricks crossed a $7 billion revenue run rate in its most recent quarter, growing over 80% year-on-year whilst maintaining positive free cash flow. This investment follows AIX's deployment of over one-third of its portfolio across positions including ByteDance, Helsing, and Handshake. The trust aims to provide Australian investors access to private AI market leaders typically limited to institutional investors. GCM Grosvenor manages the trust's investments and is in advanced discussions to close several additional positions.
