Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
  • A certificate issued by the New Jersey Department of Education, State Board of Examiners
  • A current and valid New Jersey license
  • Valid driver’s license in incumbent’s legal name and current address with no provisional restrictions
  • Minimum age 18
  • Knowledge of nursing/clinical operations and procedures required
  • Knowledge of primary care principles and practices
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record individual medical symptoms, reactions, and progress required
  • Knowledge of emergency medical procedures, of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration required
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, management, and organization skills required
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods, and procedures for the delivery of medical assessment and treatment required
Responsibilities
  • Provides health counseling and education for students, family members/guardians, and staff members
  • Implements and monitors a communicable disease and infection control program to promptly identify and assess the infectious condition, appropriately communicate each situation to appropriate parties in an effort to alleviate individual and group health concerns, and aid in the reduction of absenteeism of students and staff
  • Participates in the child study team process by interpreting significant findings of health history, physical assessment, and reports of medical consultants and provides information pertinent to each student’s individual situation
  • Consults with staff, Principal, and/or staff regarding modification or change in educational environment necessitated by the student’s developmental or health status within the limits of confidentiality
  • Participates in the health education program by providing health instruction and in-service education; Initiates, facilitates, and maintains liaison between the Schools, the community, and health agencies
  • Implements appropriate action pertaining to state, county, and local School District health laws and regulations governing public schools
  • Evaluates the effectiveness, comprehensiveness, and continuity of interventions to determine adequacy and/or modification of current treatment plan
  • Provides instruction to school faculty on communicable diseases and other health concerns
  • Provides training and direction regarding the emergency administration of epinephrine for Schools’ staff
  • Reviews, summarizes, and transmits available health and medical information of individual students for review and assessment by child study team members
  • Writes and updates, at least annually, the accommodation plan including the individualized health plan required under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 for any student requiring such plans
  • Provides ongoing leadership, advice, training, and guidance to Registered Nurse(s) in Education in the performance of health services, medical activities, and nursing tasks
  • Ensures proper staffing levels and work distribution
  • Conducts regular staff meetings and attends various management meetings to promote a constant flow of information, open discussions, knowledge sharing, and to keep staff well-informed
  • This position is one of two nurse positions on the school staff
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of general nursing experience preferred working with the developmentally disabled and/or the traumatically brain injured
