Wintermute pivots to AI with $1B investment as crypto trading slumps.

Wintermute pivots to AI with $1B investment as crypto trading slumps. Key highlights. Table of Contents * Wintermute commits $1 billion across five years to build AI data centers and high-frequency trading capabilities * Target set for traditional markets to contribute over 50% of total revenue by late 2027, compared to current 10% * Average daily trading volumes declined to $10 billion in 2026 from $15 billion the previous year * US division secured broker-dealer license, enabling equity and options trading activities * Workforce expansion of approximately 40% planned for next year The London-headquartered crypto market maker Wintermute has unveiled plans to deploy approximately $1 billion over a five-year period to build high-frequency trading systems and artificial intelligence data center capabilities. This strategic shift represents a significant departure from the company's cryptocurrency-focused origins toward traditional asset classes including equities, commodities, and foreign exchange markets. Chief Executive Evgeny Gaevoy revealed to Bloomberg that traditional market activities currently account for roughly 10% of total company revenues. The ambitious goal is to push this figure past the 50% threshold before 2027 concludes. The entire investment program will be financed through accumulated profits rather than external capital. This strategic pivot arrives at a time when cryptocurrency market activity has cooled considerably. The firm's daily trading volumes have contracted to approximately $10 billion in 2026, representing a significant decline from the $15 billion recorded in 2025. Bitcoin prices have similarly retreated to roughly half the peak levels exceeding $126,000 seen in October. Despite market headwinds, institutional clients represented an unprecedented 72% of spot trading activity on Wintermute's over-the-counter platform during the first six months of 2026. The company maintained profitability throughout 2025 and forecasts continued positive earnings for the current year. Taking on established market leaders. Wintermute faces formidable competition from established high-frequency trading powerhouses including Jane Street, Citadel Securities, and XTX Markets. XTX currently processes over $250 billion in daily trading volume and has publicly committed approximately $1.15 billion toward constructing five data center facilities in Finland. Jane Street has similarly embarked on proprietary data center development. According to Gaevoy, success in these competitive markets extends far beyond mere latency optimization. The planned infrastructure will support quantitative model development and training while dramatically expanding computational power, data storage, and network throughput capabilities. The company initiated trading in exchange-traded funds and perpetual futures contracts linked to tangible assets throughout 2025. Round-the-clock exposure to West Texas Intermediate crude oil was introduced in March, followed by the launch of a prediction markets trading desk in early 2026. Regulatory approval unlocks growth opportunities. The United States division of Wintermute obtained broker-dealer registration last week. This regulatory milestone grants the firm authority to execute equity and stock option transactions while serving as an authorized participant in exchange-traded fund creation and redemption processes. Concurrent with this expansion, the organization intends to significantly bolster its New York presence beyond the current 17-person team and increase total worldwide personnel by roughly 40% throughout the coming year. This diversification strategy mirrors broader industry trends. Major cryptocurrency platforms including Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken have similarly extended their offerings into tokenized equity products and other instruments tied to conventional financial markets. Riot Platforms, primarily known for Bitcoin mining operations, recently executed a 20-year agreement with Anthropic securing 191 megawatts of data center capacity at its Rockdale facility in a transaction valued at approximately $9.1 billion, illustrating the growing convergence between cryptocurrency enterprises and the wider technology and financial services sectors. During the 2021 cryptocurrency bull cycle, Wintermute generated $582 million in profits, Forbes reported. Limited Time Offer Get 3 free stock ebooks. Wintermute targets over 50% of revenue from outside crypto by 2027.

Wintermute targets over 50% of revenue from outside crypto by 2027. Crypto trading firm Wintermute is seeking to generate more than half of its revenue outside digital assets by the end of 2027 as it builds businesses across traditional financial markets, Bloomberg reported, citing Chief Executive Evgeny Gaevoy. The firm is entering equities, commodities, foreign exchange and prediction markets. Those businesses currently contribute about 10% of revenue, leaving Wintermute with a substantial shift to make to reach its 2027 target. As part of the expansion, Wintermute expects to deploy roughly $1 billion over five years on high-frequency trading capabilities and infrastructure for AI data centers. The spending is expected to come from retained earnings. The push comes as trading activity at the market maker has moderated. Gaevoy said average daily trading volume is about $10 billion this year, compared with approximately $15 billion last year. Wintermute is also building out its U.S. securities operations after its local affiliate secured broker-dealer registration. The approval gives the affiliate access to equity and equity-options trading, enabling it to serve as an authorized participant in exchange-traded products. Staffing is set to increase alongside the expansion. The company intends to double its 17-member New York workforce next year and grow its global headcount by 40%.
