Requirements
  • At least 8 years of research and insights experience.
  • Experience researching chat interfaces or generative artificial intelligence search tools and using a range of generative artificial intelligence tools and features.
  • Experience moderating qualitative research and facilitating brainstorms and workshops with cross-functional partners.
  • Mastery of research methods including participatory design, in-person and remote interviews, ethnographies, co-creation, user-initiated feedback tools, surveys, card sorting, and usability studies.
  • Experience executing qualitative and quantitative research and selecting the appropriate approach based on the problem to be solved.
  • Experience synthesizing complex findings into compelling narratives and visualizing insights for diverse audiences.
Responsibilities
  • Lead a human-centered design approach for product teams and inspire colleagues to build innovative product features grounded in user needs to support New AI Products and Platforms and company goals.
  • Use research-based insights and generative artificial intelligence tools for rapid prototype iteration.
  • Own quality and editorial integrity evaluation by creating frameworks to assess the success of artificial intelligence prototypes and products.
  • Build innovative solutions using artificial intelligence tools to support parts of the research process.
  • Stay current with industry trends, research methodologies, large language model advancements, and emerging technologies.
  • Champion the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence to ensure tools uphold standards of accuracy and objectivity.
  • Complement research with behavioral data, proprietary and industry research, and A/B testing results to provide a holistic view of users.
  • Collaborate with Audience Insights researchers across News Product, Marketing, Cooking, Wirecutter, The Athletic, and Games to identify collaboration opportunities and avoid duplicative product work.
  • Manage external research vendors supporting moderation, fieldwork, and analysis, ensuring high-quality and efficient project execution.
  • Contribute to the collaborative culture of Audience Insights and the New AI Products and Platforms mission.
  • Help The New York Times understand its audiences and build empathy for them.
  • Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and commitment to the company mission.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience conducting research for early-stage 0-to-1 product development, including identifying opportunities, validating concepts, and shaping new product experiences.
  • Experience working in rapid prototyping environments and using research to inform iterative product development and experimentation.
  • Experience building alignment among cross-functional stakeholders, including Product, Design, Engineering, Editorial, and Marketing partners.
  • Experience presenting to stakeholders, senior management, and fellow researchers.
  • Curiosity about the role of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of information, media, and journalism.
