Accounting Aid Society

View

Accounting Aid Society provides free tax help under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for people with low to moderate incomes. It operates by recruiting and training volunteers who prepare and file federal and state tax returns for eligible filers at multiple sites, using IRS-certified software and processes. The service focuses on maximizing refunds and credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, for struggling families who might not otherwise access professional tax help. Compared with for-profit tax services, it highlights a long-standing, community-based, volunteer-driven model with a track record spanning many years. The goal is to expand access to accurate tax filings, increase refunds and credits for low-income households, and improve financial stability for the communities it serves.

What believers are saying

  • 2025 coalition tax outreach with Detroit and Macomb kept demand and visibility high.
  • AARP and grant-backed credit outreach expanded reach to older taxpayers and eligible filers.
  • 2026 volunteer recruitment across 20-plus locations signals continued operating scale and community demand.

What critics are saying

  • Contributions supplied 95.2% of 2024 revenue, leaving funding fragile and donor-dependent.
  • Fiscal 2024 showed a $190,228 deficit, pressuring reserves and program stability.
  • Volunteer recruiting remains a bottleneck; fewer tax preparers would choke 2026 site coverage.

What makes Accounting Aid Society unique

  • Detroit VITA leader with 50-year community trust and 20-plus tax sites.
  • Priscilla Perkins has led since January 2022, bringing fundraising and media visibility.
  • Services extend beyond taxes, including IRS dispute help and low-income tax clinics.
