About the company

The New York Independent System Operator runs New York's high-voltage electricity grid and wholesale power markets for generators, utilities and other market participants. As an independent nonprofit, it coordinates power flows around the clock while keeping grid operations separate from ownership of transmission lines. Its competitive auctions match electricity supply with demand, with prices reflecting operating costs and constraints on the grid. The organization also assesses future reliability needs and studies proposed connections to the power system across New York. NYISO began operating in 1999 and is headquartered in Rensselaer, New York.
