Requirements
- A nurse practitioner must graduate from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- A nurse practitioner must hold national certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center.
- A nurse practitioner must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- A nurse practitioner must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- A physician assistant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s degree as a Physician Assistant.
- A physician assistant must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant approved training program.
- A physician assistant must hold certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- A physician assistant must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- A physician assistant must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- The role requires eligibility to provide healthcare services under state law, professional licensing or certification authority requirements, and applicable hospital privileges.
- The role requires proficiency with computers.
- The role requires the ability to perform heavy or hard work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
Responsibilities
- Complete comprehensive patient health evaluations, including biological, social, and psychological assessments, in collaboration with the clinical or faculty team.
- Assess and coordinate the educational and psychosocial needs of patients and caretakers.
- Develop and review plans of care with the clinical team, participate in directing care, and coordinate discharge planning or follow-up.
- Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the applicable scope of practice.
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in the infusion center and ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, pre-treatment evaluations, pre-procedure evaluations, ambulatory clinics, and inpatient patient care as applicable.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations when appropriate, in collaboration with hematology/oncology faculty or under established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge and follow-up by ordering or coordinating services and tests needed for outpatient follow-up.
- Perform necessary procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Develop individualized hematology/oncology plans of care that include acute management, teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
- Participate in physician rounds as applicable.
- Identify unstable or complex hematology/oncology situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in infusion center, clinic, or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate hematology/oncology patients and direct follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Evaluate patient and family teaching effectiveness and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff on education plans.
- Maintain and update clinical knowledge throughout the year and complete identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for hematology/oncology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute relevant literature as appropriate.
- Communicate with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations in patient medical records according to hospital policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in hematology/oncology practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to hematology/oncology patients and families in infusion center, inpatient, and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Participate in the WVUH/UHA Performance Improvement Plan and apply performance improvement findings to patient care.
- Review and interpret hematology/oncology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Oversee and provide comprehensive individualized care for patients evaluated and managed in the infusion center within the scope of practice.
- Provide direct supervision of patients in the infusion center until the last patient receiving an infusion leaves.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in hematology/oncology, acute care, or internal medicine is preferred.
- Oncology Certified Nurse or Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse certification is preferred.
- A Master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
