Requirements

  • Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Hold national certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Hold or be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department’s discretion.
  • Hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree as a Physician Assistant and graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved training program for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Hold certification from the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Hold or be eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department’s discretion.
  • Be licensed or certified to provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the applicable professional licensing or certification authority and hospital privileges.
  • Meet the physical demands of heavy or hard work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 pounds or more.
  • Work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, and work around biohazards, infectious diseases, the deceased, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with computers.

Responsibilities

  • Manage comprehensive, individualized care for patients and families in the infusion center and ambulatory setting.
  • Complete daily rounds and conduct consultations, pretreatment evaluations, and preprocedure evaluations in the infusion center as applicable; participate in ambulatory clinics and inpatient patient care.
  • Complete integrated assessments and comprehensive clinical evaluations, document findings in the medical record, and use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making.
  • In collaboration with hematology/oncology faculty or by following established clinical guidelines and protocols, order additional tests or consultations as appropriate.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and procedures within established clinical guidelines and scope of practice, and communicate test results.
  • Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
  • Facilitate patient discharge and follow-up by ordering and coordinating appropriate services and tests needed before discharge from the infusion center and for outpatient clinic follow-up, as applicable.
  • Develop individualized plans of care for hematology/oncology patients, including acute management, teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members as needed.
  • Provide care to patients across the age continuum consistent with educational experience and certification.
  • Participate in physician rounds as applicable and direct follow-up procedures and tests for hematology/oncology patients in the ambulatory setting as applicable.
  • Identify unstable or complex hematology/oncology patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in the infusion center, clinic, or hospital setting.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Assist in collecting patient outcome measures, including with faculty, administrators, and directors.
  • Use equipment safely and base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
  • Educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies; assess the effectiveness of patient and family education and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to complete education plans.
  • Maintain and update professional knowledge throughout the year and complete identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for hematology/oncology patients and provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
  • Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute relevant literature as appropriate to the area of expertise.
  • Communicate with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
  • Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations in each patient’s medical record in accordance with hospital and University Health Associates policies and documentation standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff on patient outcome-based improvements in care; apply performance-improvement findings to practice to improve patient care.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing hematology/oncology practice changes that positively affect patient outcomes.
  • Work with medical and nursing staff on problem-solving and professional support; participate in and initiate interdisciplinary patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
  • Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to hematology/oncology patients and families in infusion, inpatient, and ambulatory settings.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Review and interpret hematology/oncology data from patient registries and clinical and financial reports, including length of stay, access to care, and cost per case; recommend and implement changes as necessary.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the principal investigator.
  • Adhere to University Health Associates performance expectations for people, service, performance improvement, and shared values and culture.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.
  • Oversee and provide comprehensive, individualized care for patients being evaluated and managed in the infusion center within scope of practice.
  • Provide direct supervision of patients in the infusion center until the last patient receiving an infusion leaves.

Desired Qualifications

  • Hematology/oncology, acute care, or internal medicine experience is preferred for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse or Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse certification is preferred for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Hematology/oncology, acute care, or internal medicine experience is preferred for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered for the physician assistant pathway.
  • A master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
