Michelin tires now have RFID tags, and here's what they track. Advanced technology helps improve tire quality and performance Add CarScoops on Google: Just about everything these days seems to want to collect your data. Carscoops has told you in the past how even tire manufacturers are adding computer chips to their products, like Pirellis with sensors in the tire that helps a car adjust traction in real time if it detects hydroplaning. Now, Michelin, which has been innovating on the EV tire front, is adding a different type of chip to its tires, specifically RFID tags, which stands for Radio Frequency Identification. Importantly, the technology doesn't track drivers. Instead, it helps Michelin track the tire in question. The tire manufacturer embeds a chip and antenna between protective rubber layers cured into the tire. Its identifier contains a company prefix, a product reference, and a serial number, all of which is permanently locked after programming. That gives individual tires an identity that remains throughout the life cycle. Michelin's tire data service lists information including the brand, product description, and tire size. The tracking aspect refers to scans during manufacturing, inventory handling, delivery, servicing, and recycling that connect that same tire to different stages of its life. Can the tags track your driving? The RFID technology Michelin uses is passive and needs no battery. According to NHTSA, passive tire tags obtain power from radio waves emitted by a reader and return the stored information when scanned. This identification system therefore requires reading equipment within range, meaning the RFID tag cannot transmit without that equipment giving it the small amount of power required to return its signal. So, in short, these Michelin tires can't track you. That also separates RFID identification from tire-pressure or temperature monitoring. Michelin describes tire-mounted sensors as separate hardware that measures those conditions and communicates using the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol. An RFID tag alone doesn't make an ordinary tire capable of reporting on pressure, temperature, or remaining tread depth. The car would need several additional sensors that could encode that data onto the RFID chip. From there, it would require other sensors that could read that data. It would be akin to throwing a middleman into the fray where there's no need for one. The difficulty of tire tracking. Truly trying to track a person using RFID tags from their car tires would be a serious pain, and a far cry from license plate cameras tracking your car. Sure, the tires have a permanent identifier, so in theory, someone could track down a person via the tires on their car with such a tag. But consider the steps required to do so. First, they'd need access to technology that can scan the tire and record the ID. Next, you would need access to Michelin's database, or a similar one, with a record of every time that tire was scanned in the past. And ultimately, all they would really have is a patchy network of scans over time. NHTSA's electronic tire-identification study also found that scanning a tag wouldn't directly reveal an owner's personal information. For the driver, the distinction is straightforward. The tag identifies the rubber. Learning more about the car or its owner takes additional equipment and records that very few have access to. Even with that access, it would be a tough task to find someone's personal information with nothing but the tire's RFID data.

TALA chef henry Onesemo takes centre stage at MICHELIN ceremony in South Australia. Kimberley Dixon October 15, 2026 TALA Chef, Henry Onesemo has represented New Zealand's hospitality industry at Australia's first MICHELIN Guide ceremony, joining an international line-up of chefs for the launch of the inaugural MICHELIN Guide South Australia. Onesemo was invited to cook at the prestigious Adelaide event, bringing a taste of Samoa to South Australia's milestone night for the restaurant industry on October 14. He appeared alongside chef Alvin Leung of Hong Kong's Two MICHELIN Star restaurant Bo Innovation, as well as South Australian chefs Alanna Sapwell of Esmay, Dan Moss of Skillogalee Barrel House and Duncan Welgemoed of Africola. The invitation follows Onesemo's involvement in New Zealand's inaugural MICHELIN ceremony in June, where Auckland restaurant TALA was awarded One MICHELIN Star and Onesemo and his team prepared dishes for guests. Henry Onesemo grew up in Samoa and the dishes at TALA are inspired by his Samoan heritage. He combines traditional cooking with modern techniques to bring the flavours and food stories of Samoa's villages and street stalls to life in new and unexpected ways. Celebrating South Australian chefs. For the chef, the Adelaide ceremony offered an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of fellow hospitality operators without the anticipation of waiting to hear his own restaurant's name announced. "I know just how special it is for a restaurant to be recognised by MICHELIN and we're thrilled for all those awarded last night," Onesemo said. "It was also really nice to be here knowing that we didn't have to worry about whether our name would be called out!" The launch of the South Australian guide marks another significant development in the MICHELIN Guide's expansion, bringing international attention to the region's dining scene. For TALA, Onesemo's invitation reinforces his Auckland restaurant's growing international profile following its One MICHELIN Star recognition, while highlighting the role New Zealand chefs can play in major international hospitality events. TALA offers a multi-course experience were traditional flavours are reinterpreted in creative ways, delivering a deeply personal and immersive dining journey.
Australia's first-ever Michelin stars go to 11 restaurants in one state. 3 hours ago Florence Freeman Australia has been awarded its first Michelin stars, with 11 restaurants in the state of South Australia receiving the distinction. Magill Estate Restaurant in Adelaide was the only venue to receive two stars, while 10 others were awarded one star each. South Australia's government paid for incognito inspectors to visit the state, according to national broadcaster ABC, which is why no spots have been recognised in other parts of the country. The announcement comes more than a century after the Michelin Guide was first published in France and following years of unsuccessful attempts to bring it to Australia. Michelin has approached the national tourism board about bringing the guide to the country more than once, with no luck. South Australia decided to go it alone and pursued its own deal. The state government has not disclosed how much it paid, but Tourism Minister Emily Bourke defended the investment in an interview with ABC News. "It is enabling us to create a tourism destination and put us on the world map," she said. The move follows Michelin's expansion into New Zealand, which became the first destination in Oceania to feature in the guide in July, agreeing to pay NZ$6.3m (£2.7m; $3.5m) over three years for its inclusion. Created by brothers André and Édouard Michelin in 1900, the guide was originally designed to encourage motorists to travel - ultimately boosting their core business of selling tyres. It offered drivers maps and recommendations for places to eat and stay, before evolving into one of the best-known names in restaurant recognition. Michelin stars were introduced in 1926 and have since become a major distinction for chefs and restaurants around the world. One star recognises high-quality cooking, two stars indicate excellent cooking worth a detour, while three stars are reserved for exceptional cuisine worth a special journey. Among the one-star recipients is Arkhé in Norwood, which specialises in open-fire cooking, while Aptos in Adelaide serves a tasting menu focused on native Australian ingredients. Here is the full list: Two Michelin stars * Magill Estate Restaurant, Rosslyn Park One Michelin star * Anvers Restaurant, Kangarilla * Maxwell Restaurant, McLaren Vale * Botanic, Adelaide * Arkhé, Norwood * Esmay, Adelaide * Aurora at ILA, Adelaide * Hentley Farm, Seppeltsfield * LVN Restaurant at Bird in Hand, Woodside * Aptos, Stirling * Skillogalee Barrel House, Sevenhill The wider guide includes more than 70 other South Australian restaurants, with some recognised through the Bib Gourmand category, which highlights restaurants offering good food at more moderate prices.
