Verizon takes on T-Mobile with new phone plan for customers. September 29, 2026 Verizon has quietly introduced a new phone plan that directly competes with a low-priced offering that T-Mobile recently launched. As Americans look for ways to cut their monthly expenses, T-Mobile rolled out its Super Essentials Saver wireless plan in August, exclusively for Walmart customers. The plan is $25 per line per month (with the autopay discount applied) and includes unlimited 5G data, 50GB of premium data, Scam Shield, and unlimited text, talk, hotspot, and 3G hotspot. It also offers coverage in Canada and Mexico, as well as unlimited texting in over 215 countries. Customers can get up to two lines of service on the Super Essentials Saver plan, with no activation fee or port-in requirement. Verizon launches its own Walmart-exclusive phone plan. The battle for value-conscious customers has just intensified as Verizon is countering T-Mobile's new offer with its own low-priced, Walmart-exclusive wireless plan. The new offering is $25 per line per month (with autopay enabled), just like T-Mobile's new Super Essentials Saver plan. The discounted Simplicity option includes premium unlimited text, talk and data, 720p streaming and 10GB of high-speed hotspot data. However, if customers on this plan are traveling, they would need to get a travel pass for $12 a day to get unlimited talk, text and data for 24 hours in over 210 countries/destinations. The plan allows customers to add up to 12 lines, and it is stackable with Verizon's $15 Bring a Number discount. Also, it is a "limited-time offer" available only to new customers switching from another carrier, according to the advertisement. Verizon doubles down on value after customer losses. The new Walmart-exclusive offering from Verizon comes as the carrier rolls out more value-focused wireless plans after losing about 2.25 million wireless customers over the past three years. Verizon CEO Dan Schulman said on an earnings call in January that these losses were due to factors such as price increases and heightened competition. In a June Light Reading article, Roger Entner, a lead analyst at Recon Analytics, wrote that "Verizon's value-for-money perception has run negative for the last two years." "Customers like Verizon but dislike what it costs relative to what they believe they get," wrote Entner. More Verizon News: One of the new plans Verizon recently introduced to address this problem is its Simplicity phone plan, which launched in June and offers wireless service for $45 a month, or $30 with autopay and the Switcher discount. The carrier also launched its Verizon One plan, combining mobile and home internet service for $70 per month. Verizon's recent push toward more value-focused plans now extends to the retail channel, where it is following T-Mobile's lead with a low-priced Walmart-exclusive wireless plan. The move aligns with growing consumer interest in purchasing mobile service from retailers. According to a survey from Oxio in March, 56% of U.S. consumers would consider buying their mobile service from a retailer, up from 50% in 2025. "Trust is becoming a competitive lever," said Oxio CEO Nicolas Girard in the survey release. "Retailers and digital-first brands are emerging as credible places to buy mobile service. Familiarity, accountability and perceived fairness matter more when consumers are watching every fee."
Verizon launches brand new AI training programme. Verizon has recently launched a $70 million AI training programme for job seekers, early-career professionals and small businesses. This move is likely a result of the perceived growing AI skills gap. The mobile operator's AI Skills for America initiative combines Verizon's existing $20 million Reskilling and Career Transition Fund for departing employees with $50 million in new funding. The programme will provide participants with free access to training. The operator claimed premium AI training can cost more than $700 per year. Verizon CEO Dan Schulman said the US economy would be stronger if workers received the support needed to adapt as AI changes workplaces. He called on companies and the public sector to invest in workers as urgently as they invest in technology. Free training, he argued, could help people remain employed or change careers, while giving small businesses room to grow. "When you empower people to embrace change rather than fear it, you create a ripple effect that builds healthier communities and a stronger and more resilient national economy", Schulman stated. To make AI training more accessible, Verizon is creating a free portal featuring content from IBM, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, Coursera, and OpenAI. The programme also includes collaboration with mission-based organisations such as the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship and Goodwill Industries International. Verizon noted those organisations have strong community ties and can provide the coaching, guidance and local support needed to turn online learning into practical skills and greater confidence. The initiative will be offered nationwide, with additional support services available in selected regions. Verizon plans to work with community partners and participants to gather feedback and update the training as workforce needs change. Image Credit: Verizon

The Razr Fold is priced at $1,949.99, but you can have it for $25 per month with a four-year device payment plan, if you pick Verizon's Simplicity plan. Verizon is additionally selling the Moto Buds 2 Plus for $149, and it's giving you six months of Google AI Pro for free. This includes access to Gemini as well as 5TB of cloud storage on Google Drive. The Google AI Pro benefit is available to customers on eligible Simplicity, myPlan, FWA, and Fios plans. Verizon has launched a $70 million initiative to offer free AI training to US job seekers, small businesses, educators, and displaced workers. The program, Verizon AI Skills for America, combines a previously established $20 million fund with an additional $50 million commitment. The telecommunications company is creating an online portal featuring training materials from IBM, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, Coursera, and OpenAI. Community nonprofits including Goodwill Industries International will provide hands-on coaching alongside the online coursework. CEO Dan Schulman said AI training typically costs over $700 per person annually when purchased independently. He urged other Fortune 100 companies to launch similar initiatives, suggesting collective contributions could create a multibillion-dollar fund. The programme launches nationwide, with enhanced support services in select regional markets. Workers can register at verizon.com/aiskillsforamerica.
