About the Job

Requirements

  • Experience leading development and beginning architecture of components of scalable distributed systems.
  • Ability to define and enforce scalability requirements for owned components and optimize code and data paths for high-throughput, hyper-scale workloads.
  • Experience leveraging data plane platforms for large-scale retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Knowledge of fault-tolerant, in-service-upgradable system design, including redundancy, replication, failover, and handling network partitions.
  • Knowledge of load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting techniques for network unreliability while meeting service level objectives.
  • Ability to establish key performance indicators and telemetry, build dashboards and alerts, and design validation involving fault injection and brownouts.
  • Experience with replication and synchronization for correctness, data integrity, and durability.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve production issues and ensure operational readiness.
  • Knowledge of security controls, remediation, compliance documentation, and cloud infrastructure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Experience developing Infrastructure as Code and automation for safe patching, updates, and rollbacks under change-management plans.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate moderately complex tasks, timelines, deliverables, and work across multiple projects.
  • Ability to analyze moderately complex problems, document problem-solving strategies, and escalate unresolved or critical issues with proposed solutions.
  • Ability to pursue ongoing learning, apply feedback and training, and share knowledge across teams.
  • Ability to recommend and collaborate on process improvements and assess their impact on stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation of components of scalable distributed systems, and begin architecting those components, including use of distributed state management tools.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and high-throughput requirements.
  • Define scalability requirements for owned components and ensure design and implementation requirements are met.
  • Design systems to scale elastically, both up and down.
  • Use data plane platforms for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Design performance and load testing.
  • Build fault-tolerant components and systems that support in-service updates through redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Design systems to handle service disruptions such as network partitions by prioritizing consistency, availability, or partition tolerance.
  • Implement and optimize load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting approaches to handle network unreliability.
  • Design durable components and systems that adhere to service level objectives and set availability and durability expectations for other departmental computing services.
  • Define key performance indicators and telemetry to identify gaps or issues in running systems.
  • Build and customize moderately complex dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerts to monitor component and system health proactively.
  • Design and implement functional and correctness requirements for features and systems in new or existing systems.
  • Design complex test scenarios, such as fault injection and brownouts, to evaluate system correctness.
  • Implement replication and synchronization techniques to maintain data integrity and availability.
  • Proactively diagnose, debug, and resolve issues in active components and systems, and mentor others in these processes.
  • Implement strategies to prevent interruptions and avoid requiring customer or user maintenance windows when resolving issues.
  • Maintain expertise in owned components and systems for troubleshooting and performance.
  • Meet operational readiness expectations through design and implementation.
  • Serve in operational support rotations and guide incident response and root-cause investigations.
  • Implement security measures, including encryption and access controls, to protect data and applications in multi-tenant environments.
  • Execute remediation plans for identified security gaps.
  • Maintain cloud infrastructure compliance with industry standards and regulations and keep documentation current.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools, including Infrastructure as Code, to manage cloud infrastructure.
  • Create and follow change-management plans for patching, updating, and rolling back applications, and begin designing systems and components to automate those processes.
  • Manage and coordinate moderately complex tasks, monitor timelines and deliverables, delegate and prioritize work across projects, provide technical oversight, and adjust plans for changes in resources or timelines.
  • Collaborate across the organization to align expectations and achieve shared objectives, and use knowledge of business leaders, stakeholders, and customers to ensure proposed solutions meet their needs.
  • Seek and listen to diverse perspectives so others feel heard and respected.
  • Escalate unresolved or critical issues with a thorough assessment and potential solutions, and review, contribute to, and document problem-solving strategies.
  • Pursue learning opportunities, stay current with industry trends and best practices, seek feedback and training, and coach and mentor junior team members.
  • Develop ideas, recommend updates, and collaborate on process improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness across teams, evaluate stakeholder impact, and solicit feedback on alternatives.
  • Participate in candidate interviews, assess candidates, and provide hiring recommendations.
