  • A bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in substation protection relay systems within EHV electrical substations, Oil & Gas, or power transmission industries is required.
  • Experience in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction environments with multidisciplinary teams is required.
  • Experience in secondary engineering, including control and protection, substation automation systems, auxiliary systems, telecom, and interface engineering, up to 765 kV, 400 kV, or 220 kV and HVDC substations is required.
  • Experience or knowledge of relay testing, equipment testing, control and protection scheme testing, and substation automation system commissioning is valued, with at least 1 year of commissioning experience receiving additional weightage.
  • Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, responsiveness, supervision, problem-solving, program and project management, documentation, planning, execution, and project management skills are required.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Willingness to travel internationally as required is required.
  • Technical leadership in a complex system engineering development environment is required.
  • The candidate must be able to make self-directed decisions, involve subject-matter experts when needed, and contribute to cross-functional leadership teams.
  • The role requires in-depth understanding of substation protection systems, relay technologies, relay tripping philosophies, substation automation systems, interface engineering, low-voltage auxiliary systems, and telecom panels.
  • The role requires the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, identify issues, implement solutions, maintain quality and compliance, and guide and mentor junior engineers.
Responsibilities
  • Design and prepare engineering drawings, including SLD, KLD, PSLD, and CRP drawings, using an E-CAD tool such as Engineering Base, E-Plan, or AutoCAD Electrical for substations up to 400 kV and 765 kV.
  • Design and review substation automation systems based on IEC 61850 and their interconnections.
  • Review bills of quantities and network drawings for PLCC and FOTE engineering, and interface between CRP and substation automation systems with telecom equipment.
  • Review equipment drawings for major AIS and GIS substation equipment, including circuit breakers, isolators, earth switches, CSD, PDM, transformers, reactors, and associated condition-monitoring devices.
  • Perform CT and VT sizing calculations.
  • Design and review control and power cable engineering for substations.
  • Design low-voltage and low-tension auxiliary systems for electrical substations and interface them with substation automation systems and SCADA.
  • Perform and review protection relay application and setting calculations and coordination, including tripping analysis.
  • Execute assigned objectives in association with applicable workgroups and coordinate with the GSI Global Engineering Center, regions, and business lines as required by projects.
  • Perform or review electrical power-system studies, including load-flow and short-circuit studies.
  • Prepare automation and RTU software databases, review and consolidate I/O mapping against scheme drawings, and troubleshoot database issues in substation automation and RTU-based systems.
  • Work with different makes of intelligent electronic devices, numerical protection relays, and bay control units.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with renewable projects, including solar, onshore or offshore wind, battery storage, or hybrid projects.
  • Experience with HVDC and FACTS integrated project applications.
  • Competency with specialized tools such as CANECO, ETAP, DIgSILENT, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience with substation automation systems and database preparation in automation or RTU software.
  • Experience reviewing and consolidating I/O mapping and troubleshooting database issues in substation automation or RTU-based systems.
  • Ability to work with different makes of intelligent electronic devices, numerical protection relays, and bay control units.
  • An additional foreign language is a plus.

GE Vernova orders surge 68% as AI data centres drive power demand

GE Vernova, Hitachi, and Samsung partner to deploy small modular reactors across Europe

Four major engineering firms have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on building and deploying small modular reactors (SMRs) in Europe. GE Vernova, Hitachi, Samsung C&T, and Poland-based SGE will work together on market development and commercial opportunities for the BWRX-300, an SMR developed by GE Vernova and Hitachi subsidiaries. The agreement was signed during the Atlantic Council Nuclear Energy Policy Summit at the UN General Assembly in New York. SMRs are smaller-scale, plug-and-play nuclear generators that are cheaper and quicker to construct than traditional nuclear plants. They use low-enriched uranium that can be sourced entirely from western enrichment providers. The initiative has government backing from the US, Japan, and South Korea, supported by a trilateral agreement signed at the recent NATO summit.

GE Vernova shares down 20% from high as AI power demand and nuclear SMR development drive long-term growth potential

GE Vernova shares have fallen 20.8% from their 52-week high of $1,195.94, closing at $946.22 on 21 September. Despite the pullback, the stock remains up 47% over the past year. The company reported strong second-quarter results, with orders of $24.2 billion, up 88% organically year-on-year. Revenue reached $11.1 billion, up 22%, whilst net income for the first six months totalled $5.3 billion, compared with $756 million in the prior-year period. GE Vernova is positioned to benefit from surging power demand driven by artificial intelligence data centres. The company also has a nuclear energy division developing small modular reactors through a joint venture with Hitachi, with commercial operation expected by the end of 2030. The company faces challenges including a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 38.1 and declining wind division sales.

GE Vernova's $200B backlog expected to arrive in early 2027 as AI data centre boom drives power demand

GE Vernova CEO Scott Strazik announced on 16 September that the company's backlog could reach $200 billion in early 2027, earlier than Wall Street expected. The backlog stood at $167 billion at the end of Q2 2026, up from $176 billion the previous quarter. The power equipment manufacturer has seen strong demand driven by AI data centres. Data centre-related orders exceeded $5 billion in the first half of this year, more than double 2025's total. GE Vernova's Q2 revenue grew 22% year-on-year to $11.1 billion. Free cash flow reached $5.1 billion, surpassing its full-year 2025 level. The company raised its 2026 revenue forecast to $45.5 billion-$46.5 billion. However, the Wind business segment posted losses of $275 million, widening 66% year-on-year.

Big Tech burns $13.5B as AI buildout sends Treasury yields to 4.79%

US Treasury yields near 4.79% reflect strong corporate borrowing for AI investments rather than economic weakness, according to analysts Joel Litman and Rob Spivey. They argue that context matters more than absolute rate levels. Companies borrowing at 5% to fund projects returning 30-40% benefit from current rates, whilst those earning less than borrowing costs face pressure. The analysts note that AI-related corporate debt issuance reached roughly $1.5 trillion this year, driving yields higher. Alphabet posted its first negative free cash flow since 2004, burning $5.9 billion in Q2 as capital expenditure hit $44.9 billion. Amazon swung to negative $7.6 billion on a trailing basis. However, negative cash flow can signal productive investment rather than distress, the analysts suggest.
